NHRA Pro Stock veteran Kenny Delco, from East Setauket, New York, walked away unharmed in a high-speed crash during the third and final session of qualifying at the Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals at the Bandimere Speedway in Denver, Colorado on Saturday evening.
Delco, driving his 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, was racing alongside Bo Butner and had just completed a pass of 6.972-seconds at 196.27 — a run good enough to move him from 12th all the way up to 4th in the provisional qualifying order — when his machine took an abrupt left turn across the racetrack and nosed into the guardrail beyond the finish line. The car then turned onto its roof, rolling 2.5 times before landing on its roof and sliding to a stop in the shutdown area.
Delco, who had participated in the factory hot rod category during the late 1980s and early 1990s before a long hiatus, was making his first start at Denver since 1990.
