Ready To Dance: “Disco Dean” Karns Is Heading To Outlaw Armageddon

“Disco Dean” Karns is always having a good time, but don’t let his jolly demeanor fool you for one second: he’s always ready to do what it takes to win. Blazing his own trail in no-prep racing has been a wild ride and Karns is more prepared than ever to pick up a big win at Outlaw Armageddon 5.

Karns is a true student of the drag racing game and is continually looking for ways to improve his program. As a successful bracket racer, Karns learned a number of tricks that he’s brought to the world of no-prep racing. This season has been an interesting one for Karns and required him to pull from his vast experience to keep things moving in the right direction.

“This season hasn’t been terrible but it hasn’t been great either. We’ve had some minor setbacks after hurting some parts but nothing really bad. Before the season started we switched to an entirely new combination, going from a 526 cubic-inch down to a 421 cubic-inch engine, so that’s taken some adjustment. We’ve been able to turn on win lights and go some rounds. We haven’t won any No Prep Kings events yet but we have been able to runner-up at some local events. The car is still in one piece, so that’s a good thing,” Karns explains.

Going through what he’s learned so far, Karns has been able to make adjustments to the car to continue a positive trend in its performance. Taking all of that into consideration and seeing the level of competition coming to Outlaw Armageddon, Karns has made the choice to step up this engine program to improve his chances of winning.

“We’re actually got to a 520 cubic-inch engine to create something that makes more power and is slightly more reliable for Outlaw Armageddon. It looks like we’re going to have time to get the machine work done and get testing in so we will try to make it happen. It’s a bigger and improved combination to take on all of these tough teams,” Karns says.

Outlaw Armageddon is an elite no-prep event, what with all of the talented teams that will be on the property. You can’t show up to this race unprepared or it will be a short weekend when eliminations begin. Karns is using the time leading up to Outlaw Armageddon to ensure his car is ready, but he also understands that when racing begins it will be a marathon and he will use that to his advantage.

“I’m used to multi-round events because I’ve won $20,000 bracket races that take 10 or 11 rounds.  Most of the no-prep races are only four or five rounds, but racing cars of this caliber as many rounds as we will at Outlaw Armageddon is going to be interesting. This race is going to test your equipment, it’s going to test you as a driver, and it will test your team. You have to go to this event ready for war with the level of racers that you know will be there,” Karns explains.

Outlaw Armageddon might be a difficult event to win, but it’s the kind of event that Karns looks forward to attending. There is plenty of good competition to race and it’s always a good time in the pits. Those two elements provide a combination that Karns enjoys.

“I’m looking forward to the atmosphere of this race. It’s not just a race, it’s an event. It’s family-oriented, it’s fun, and it’s a race really like no other. They work hard at making the race happen and overcome any obstacles that might come up. You just can’t see this many fast no-prep cars in one place that are racing this hard for big money,” Karns says.
