Tilton Engineering Hits The Performance Street Market

Tilton Engineering knows what it takes to build reliable high-performance products. The company has worked with several racing sanctions over the year, including NASCAR, Formula One, IndyCar, and SCCA just to name a few. It’s also not uncommon to find their products on drift, drag, and dirt track cars as well. One area that Tilton has not had a lot of coverage is the performance street market. However, that is about to change with the introduction of the new ST-246 twin-disc designed for performance street cars.

The ST-246 twin-disc clutch was built specifically for the high-horsepower cars that roam the streets today. While one might think that the “ST” in ST-246 stands for street, it actually means strap type, which refers to the straps used on the assembly verses the lug type used in a traditional drag race clutch. These straps allow a clean release between the flywheel and clutch discs during shifts and they also reduce the noise associated with racing clutch setups.

The clutch assembly measures out to 246mm or 9.7-inches and also offers a billet aluminum clutch cover, which is similar to what is used in NASCAR and IndyCar. You can choose between two different clutch materials as well. The organic disc is rated for 850 lb-ft of torque while the Cerametallic disc will hold a massive 1,250 lb-ft of torque. Kirk Skaufel, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Tilton Engineering, said, “The Cerametallic disc is designed more for the street/strip enthusiast. While this solid hub disc is rated for 1,250 lb-ft of torque capacity, our hub dyno maxes out at 1,300 lb-ft of torque, so we don’t know what it will truly hold over that mark.” According to Kirk, the Chromoly steel flywheel provides extraordinary strength and durability. It features a precision register to locate the clutch and provide optimal balance, as opposed to loose-fitting bolts & dowels used with stamped steel clutches.

The ST-246 twin-disc is available for fifth and sixth-gen Camaros, C5, C6, C7 Corvettes, 6-bolt LS, 8-bolt LSX, LT1, LT4, and early internally balanced Chevrolet V8 engines with a TREMEC T56 Magnum or TKO transmissions. Tilton also offers this unit for the Coyote and early internally balanced Ford engines with TREMEC T56 Magnum or TKO transmissions.
