Video: Guy Swaps Damaged LS2 For Junkyard 4.8 LSX To Continue Racing

If you’re not familiar with the Rocky Mountain Race Week event, then this video is for you. If you like watching things go wrong at the worst of times, then this video is for you. Hell, this video is for you either way – so long as you’re a fan of LS engines.

Screen Shot 2015-07-22 at 3.25.57 PMGRThe Rocky Mountain Race Week is a (that’s right, you guessed it) week long racing event which takes place at five different tracks across Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska. One of the requirements for this racing event is that you must be able to drive from track to track and participate in at least one pass per track. To make things even more complicated, if you don’t perform your pass before 3:00 PM, you’re automatically disqualified.

The gentlemen in this ’55 Pontiac in 1320video‘s video was participating in the event when he unfortunately made a very slow pass (see at 1:01 in) due to a lean condition, causing their original junkyard 6.0 liter LS2 V8 to turn a piston into silly putty.

The owner originally began a search for a replacement piston, but then decided instead to just replace the entire engine itself.

From start to finish in under 5 hours.

After explaining the situation to the staff at the track, they were able to provide him with their forklift to aide in removing the damaged engine. The replacement engine, you ask? Another junkyard engine. This time a 4.8 liter LSX V8 which they swapped into the vehicle in just four hours.

The next day, the ’55 Pontiac drove 330 miles to Kearney Raceway in Kearney, Nebraska ready to continue the five day race week.

After spending only 4 hours installing the new junkyard 4.8 liter LSX V8, they were ready to continue racing the next morning.
