Video: Wild Action From The First Two Stops At Drag Week 2019!

The 2019 edition of Drag Week, one of the sport’s most unique and cult-like racing events, has already reached its mid-way point, as the more than 350 entered competitors traverse over 1,000 miles between four racetracks on the nation’s Eastern seaboard.

The action kicked off at the Virginia Motorsports Park under rather auspicious circumstances, as inclement weather set back the entire lot of competitors on their trek to Cecil County Dragway in Maryland. But it’s been smooth-sailing ever since, as the racers did their deed at the 1/4-mile in the town of Rising Sun and then set their compasses toward New Jersey’s Atco Dragway. Racers will trek to the Maryland International Raceway, just outside of Baltimore, on Thursday, before returning to VMP for the finale on Friday.

This year’s drag-and-drive spectacular, as it does each and every year, has played host to an entertaining collection of machinery from all over the world: like a twin-engine Chevy Venture minivan, a world record-setting Tesla, an ancient 30-second 1919-year-model Franklin Series 9B Touring, and machines from Australia, Sweden, and other locales.

Many-time Drag Week champion Tom Bailey holds a relatively commanding lead — albeit in the Unlimited class, never a sure bet until the final time-slip is turned in — over the field with runs of 6.21 and 6.83 on days one and two and a quicker-yet 6.18 today at Atco. Bryant Goldstone sits second with runs of 6.93 and 6.68 on the first two days. The top challenger to Bailey, Sweden’s Magnus Frost, clocked a 6.43 on the opening day in his twin-turbo ’74 Opel, but as you’ll see in the Tuesday clip from 1320Video, Frost got loose and took arguably the wildest ride ever on Drag Week, ending his hopes.

Check out all the wild machinery and the happenings of Drag Week, made possible by the tireless (literally) efforts of Kyle Loftis and the gang from 1320!
