Race Report: World Street Nats, NHRA Finals Highlight Weekend

IMG_7280GLIDDEN, KLUGGER LEAD STREET NATIONALS WINNERS AT ORLANDO

Billy Glidden made his long-awaited return to the winners circle at the World Street Nationals in Orlando on Sunday, earning a win in Pro Modified, while Floridian Josh Klugger captured the Radial vs The World honors to headline the winners circle lineup.

Orlando World Street Nationals

rc2Like he’s done so many times in his career, Billy Glidden didn’t have the quickest car on the property at the World Street Nationals in Orlando, but he had just enough when he needed it to overcome a steller field of Pro Modified racers to capture his first victory at the famous event since 2002, when he scored in Outlaw 10.5. Glidden ran in the fives for much of the weekend and saved his best for last, running 5.89 in the final to oust a slowing Kevin Fiscus. In Radial vs The World, Floridian Josh Klugger soloed to victory when Chad Opaleski couldn’t make the bell, while Walter Drakeford downed final round opponent Troy Pirez Jr. on a holeshot, a 4.99 to a quicker 4.95, for the Ultra Street crown. In the World Street category, Jorge Lazcano unloaded low elapsed time of the eliminations by nearly four tenths to handily defeat Greg Cason, and Tony Ridenour rolled to a 4.46-second defeat of Phil Hines to take Outlaw 275 honors.

NHRA Auto Club Finals

rc1Despite a valiant effort from challenger Jack Beckman, Funny Car points leader Del Worsham did exactly what he had to do at the Auto Club Finals in Pomona, not only defeating Beckman in a head-to-head matchup in the semifinals, but winning the season finale to close out his second career championship and first in Funny Car. In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Andrew Hines outlasted Jerry Savoie for his fifth career championship, while teammate Eddie Krawiec garnered the seasons’ final Wally. In Top Fuel, Shawn Langdon bookended the season with a win, this time driving for Don Schumacher, while Allen Johnson brought the carburetor-era of Pro Stock to a close with his win over Vincent Nobile.
