Get In Control: Using The Profiler In A Blower Car Application

What good is all of the horsepower a supercharged engine can provide if you can’t control it? That is a question that every racer must answer who utilizes forced induction, no matter if it’s a fast bracket car or wild 4,000 horsepower Pro Mod.

Tommy Gray, driver of The Undertaker Pro Mod Camaro, uses the Davis Technologies Profiler helps tame his savage beast. When you’ve made as many laps in a Pro Mod as Gray has you understand the value of good tuning tools and data. The Profiler requires quality data to be used effectively in any racing program. Any high-horsepower vehicle with forced induction can use a Profiler, however, what you get out of the device comes down to how you use it.

“The Profiler is a tool, it’s not a fix-all for every problem. You have to record a lot of data with the Profiler to get it to perform its best. The things you need to look at are driveshaft speeds in certain conditions and track conditions versus the air so you can start mapping everything out. The important part is collecting the data. The Profiler has all kinds of adjustments you can use to apply what you’ve learned. Like any product, you have to learn to tweak and tune with the data,” Gray explains.

Gray and his team have spent a fair amount of time working with their Profiler in the car to get a grasp of how it works, and they understand how to feed it data to get the best possible outcome on the track. Gray also uses the many other abilities of the Profiler to run different systems in his Camaro. These functions are great for eliminating extra electronics and can be used in many different racing applications.

“The Profiler does a lot for us besides traction control. We set the device up to shift the car and work with other electrical components like the shocks. Not only is it a traction tuning tool, it has plenty of options, and on a Pro Mod car, it’s a great tool. We also use it to work some of the fuel timers on the car. What’s really cool is you can set a mapping for it to add or retard timing. Shannon [Davis] has added features with pitch and roll so it will help fight wheelies. It will even cut cylinders out to help make the tire happy, and that helps the car go faster,” Gray says.

A big bonus that the Profiler brings to the table is the ability to work seamlessly with other devices. For blower cars like Gray’s, this was important since he was looking to make some ignition upgrades.

“Magnetos are old technology, so when FuelTech came out with their coil packs we moved to those. It was great because Shannon worked with FuelTech to make both systems work together. What I like about it is that it pretty much controls everything — less is more with a car that runs at this level,” Gray explains.

The ability to fine-tine a car with an enormous amount of horsepower is vital if you want to pick up victories consistently. As you can see, a Profiler from Davis Technologies gives those with a big blower and lots of power on tap an edge when it comes to putting the power down and controlling how their vehicle functions.
