Balancing Act: The ATI Integral Blower Damper

Engines that use boost for a power-adder are subjected to elevated stress levels internally thanks to all of that extra air entering the combustion chamber. That stress will work its way down to the crankshaft one way or another, and with engines that use a roots or screw-type supercharger it’s amplified even more. ATI Performance Products Integral Blower Damper is designed to reduce stress on the crankshaft and extend its operational lifespan significantly.

J.C. Beattie Jr. and the team at ATI were approached by racers who were having issues with hurting crankshafts in HEMI engines that had low run counts. This isn’t that farfetched of an issue considering how the violent vibrations produced by one of these high-horsepower engines can do damage, even more so when you add in a high volume of boost. ATI came up with a simple solution: they bolted a dampener to the inside of a crank pulley backward to help reduce all the vibrational noise. This extended the crank life from just seven runs to over 50 without any issues.

The design of the Integral Blower Damper is really simple, but it’s highly effective. Beattie provides some additional details about this very trick part.

“The pulley uses a spline drive on the front with optional weights if the user needs them. The outer shell of the damper is your blower drive and it’s made of billet 2424 aluminum. We can put as many magnets as you want inside at any position. With a regular spline drive, we can do a titanium hub or regular steel depending on what the user needs. We’ve got inertia weights available that can be used with these dampers and they can handle belts that range from 8mm-14mm.”
