There’s no wrong way to make an 8-second pass at the track, and some people like to find creative ways to make it happen. Robert Barry decided that building a 1945 Chevy truck would be his method of going fast. Barry’s ride isn’t powered by your typical gas engine, it’s rocking a common rail Cummins mill as a powerplant.
It may seem pedestrian to some that Barry’s truck runs in the 8’s because it’s so easy to do in a vehicle that sees nothing but track use. That’s where Barry throws a curveball at those types of individuals. His truck is street driven, and in fact, it’s completed Drag Week, in the Unlimited class. The fact that Barry has ripped on his truck for a solid week while driving over 1,000 miles is what really sets it apart from other diesel-powered vehicles.
Barry’s Chevy truck has a Frankenstein vibe going for it with its rat rod looks, parts from other vehicles, and a trailer that’s made from the bed of another truck. The 5.9-liter Cummins that powers the truck is fed a healthy dose of boost from a pair of compound turbos. Barry uses a squeeze of nitrous to help light the turbos and keep the truck running clean during a pass.
In this video from Victoryredcolorado, we get to see a quick walk around of Barry’s truck before he unleashes it on the surface of Byron Dragway. Barry was able to get a hold of the track after having some issues spooling the turbos and lay down an impressive 8.73 lick at over 143 mph.
