
Twenty-two year old drag racer Lucas McKinney died on Saturday of injuries sustained in on-track incident at the Farmington Dragway in Mocksville, N.C.
Between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday, McKinney was reportedly slowing down after a time trial run during Farmington’s opening bracket series points weekend and lost control of his machine, according to fire department officials.
A graduate of Hampton High School, the Elizabethton, N.C. native began racing junior dragsters at Bristol Dragway in 2008, and later won the High School Challenge at Bristol in 2018. Hefinished fourth in the Pro class in the 2019 DER Bracket Series, and made it to the final of the DER Series Pro class race in 2020. He was also successful in slot-car racing, winning a race in his hometown as recently as March 15.
“Lucas is going to be missed,” Red Whitmore, director of the DER Racing Series at Bristol Dragway, told the Johnson City Press. “He comes from a good family of racers who have raced with us since I started DER 14 years ago. Our condolences also go out to his slot-car family. He loved racing and loved being competitive.”
Lucas was the son of Todd and Amy McKinney, both successful drag racers.
