1987 Buick Grand National Goes From Mild to Wild in 7 Seconds

We’ve probably all been there – add the usual dual exhaust, intake and other goodies to give us a cheap power boost, but that only holds us over for so long. Then we go to more serious parts like aluminum cylinder heads, camshaft swaps and even more. Well just like that, this ’87 Grand National owner decided it was time to get serious with his build as he set his goals for the 7-second zone on a 315 drag radial.

User ‘twin-turbo-gnx’ posted some progress pictures of his build on the Yellowbullet Forum.

There will be no C16 race gas (or any race gas for that matter) in this car’s fuel tank as the 406 cubic inch small block will run E85 fuel through the Moran Motorsports 275lb injectors. Starting off with a Dart Iron Eagle block – a fresh set of the extremely popular SB2 heads. Just like the original Grand National this motor will have one turbocharger in the form of a large 106mm Precision. Other necessities to keep this high horsepower motor together include custom Diamond pistons, a Callies crankshaft, Oliver connecting rods and some Jesel rocker arms.

Controlling the shifting of all this power will be a Len Freeman TH-400 3-speed transmission with a Neal Chance bolt together torque converter. The car is almost done as the 25.3 Cert roll cage has been completed by Clocks Off Racing and final assembly commences. It should be interesting to see what this sinister small block G-Body can get done on drag radials this season. If the teaser pics are any indication of this car’s performance we’re sure it won’t disappoint.
