At the end of this month the most talked about Nitro Jam in the history of the series will travel to Rockingham Dragway for the annual Spring Nitro Jam May 1-2 at the track known the world over as “The Rock.”
Featuring new classes, new drivers and a brand new format, the Spring Nitro Jam will be an event fans will be talking about for years to come as Nitro Jam officials pull out all the stops to create a one-of-a-kind motorsports thrill show all centered around some of the best competitors in drag racing today.
And one of those classes, the incredibly popular Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car class, will be at the top of the list of must-see races when the lights go down and the fire flares up next month at Rockingham Dragway.
“I can’t wait for Rockingham. To race in front of all those screaming fans and to put on a show at such a historical track will be a thrill for me and my team,” said Peter Gallen, driver of the “Poverty Stricken” ’74 Vega. “I haven’t been this excited for a race in a long time.”
Gallen, who won for the first time last month in Baton Rouge, said he is thrilled about the new class and what it has meant for the drivers and for Nitro Jam fans. Featuring older body styles and liberal rules, these Nitro Funny Cars have produced lap after lap of side-by-side runs and incredible numbers in the first two races.
And Gallen says that the fun factor, both for the drivers and for the fans, is why he got behind the wheel in the first place.
Through two Nitro Jam events Gallen has a remarkable 6-2 round win-loss record with one victory. He also currently holds the Prostalgia NFC record for elapsed time and speed with a blistering 5.813 second pass at 246.84 mph set in Baton Rouge last month.
“I am having a lot of fun, not just because we are winning, but because of the way we are being treated. We are treated like we are stars here with the IHRA so I feel we are very blessed,” Gallen said. “I am elated so far with the way we are running. This car is a legal VRA car and that really says a lot about our performance out here.”
Gallen currently sits second in points, just nine markers behind leader Greg Jacobsmeyer. Steve Nichols, Mike McIntire and John Dunn round out the top five.
The spring Rockingham race is the third event on the 2010 Nitro Jam Tour and is one of the oldest and most prestigious events in all of drag racing. The Spring Nitro Jam dates back to the early 70s and has featured drag racing legends – both past and present – over its storied history.
Along with the brand new Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car class the Spring Nitro Jam will also feature Top Fuel and Pro Fuel Dragsters, the county’s best doorslammers and dragsters in heads-up competition, the “Cool Bus” wheelstanding school bus, the battle of the jet trucks, fireworks and more.
