Don purchased this 88 Mustang with the idea of having a weekend toy to play on the streets, but that soon blossomed to running with friend Blair Brannock in the NMRA/NMCA Tremec True Street class. He brought the car to Blair’s Rockstar Performance where Blair and Troy Fedora installed the engine and transmission, Wolfe Racecraft rear suspension, fuel system, DFI engine management and assorted wiring as well as the turbo system, including custom headers.

The engine itself is a Bennet Racing 339 short block with TFS R heads from Fox Lake with the stage 3 CNC porting option, the TH 400 transmission and converter are from PTC. A 79 MM turbo provides the boost.
The car came with a 6-point roll bar that was updated with a halo and swing out bars by Doug Carty Race cars in Pinellas Park, Florida.
After everything was wrapped up at Rockstar Performance a tune session was scheduled with David Wolfe but a faulty DFI box cut it short. Once repairs were made it was taken to Real Street Performance and tuned by Jay Meagher. After having the starter fail at NMRA Lamana was able to make all three runs at NMCA and finished with an average in the 9-second zone.

Troy Pirez Jr. disassembles the struts in preparation for the swap to the Strange components
Right now the car is over at Pro-Fab Performance in Thonotosassa for its next batch of upgrades which include Strange front struts and brakes all around sourced through TRZ Motorsports, narrowed rear with new mini tubs and an air to water intercooler set up. Matt LaRue and Troy Pirez Jr. will go testing with Don when it’s completed to assure its set up right, then in October he plans to race TRZ Ultimate street at the ORTC finals at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Also on the list are select local 275 drag radial events where rules allow for turbo combinations.
You may be asking why the need for a narrowed rear with a 275 radial tire, well that’s because at True Street events he will be running a larger tire/wheel set up with 325/50 radials on 12 inch rims. In order to get them under the car some adjustments are necessary to the body.
Don’s wife Jeri also has a love for horsepower and has a 2000 Mustang convertible with a 2003 Cobra motor sporting a 76 mm turbo kit from Hellion Power Systems
