Chasing Records With a 6 Speed And IRS – One Sleek New-Edge Bullitt

Sure, keeping the factory 6 speed boasts a lot of advantages in highway commutes, lightly modded cars or even the Tokyo Drift fan crowd, but what about a serious 9 second turbo Mustang? Most would get their ratchet right to the bellhousing bolts without a second thought.  One fearless man figured what the hell, lets have Liberty build up this T56-6 Speed and see what she’s capable of, hoping to bring home the title of being the fastest man on IRS with a 6 speed.

To read more about what David has in mind for his Bullitt, head on over to SVTPerformance.

While the Independent Rear Suspension is a tough animal to tame in itself, David is also using a Cobra-sourced T56 transmission, faceplated by Liberty’s Gears. The car has already run some high 10’s with an el-cheapo turbo at 10 PSI, but with a newer, more serious GT47-style 80mm Turbo, David is looking to run right on into the 8’s at over 150 miles per hour. For heads, David is running some heavily worked over factory 2V heads. Since he’s planning to switch to E98 fuel soon, the 96 lb. injectors are being dumped for a set of 8 235 LB’ers.

David isn’t quite handing out the whole spec sheet on his drivetrain, but rough estimates would lead us to believe he’s hanging onto about 1000 horsepower. Can David bang gears quick enough to hang with the assisted-shift 2 and 3 speed automatics ? Or will his ‘Stang fall to the wayside when it comes to all-out heads-up races ? His car has already nabbed a runner-up in the NMRA car show, but it’ll take more than sinister looks to tear down the competition. David’s schedule for 2010 is a little on the rocks, but he’ll be bringing his Bullitt out to the NMRA Lone Star Shootout in Houston come November. Some meaty 335 drag radials out back, a 6 speed and stock suspension – Yeah, you better believe this is a street car right down to the bone.
