FED’s or Front engine dragsters may be a thing of the past for most folks, but there’s quite a following of faithful nostalgia dragster racers, builders, and fans still rolling out to the drag strip on the weekends to enjoy these rolling pieces of history. They still may be known as one of the more not-so-safe drag car options, but hey, they’re cool! Running some pretty stout 8-second passes in his old-school rail, John Stanovich is looking to squeeze quite a bit more power out of his ride, making the switch from a carbureted gas-fed motor to an all-out, injected alcohol setup on his small block Chevy.
So far John has rattled off a best of 8.87 at 152 in his ’67 Jim Davis FED, but checkout his newest tweaks on Nostalgia Alky.
Stanovich’s rail is a host to a bunch of period correct parts with a 360″ small block chevy, with Brodix heads that pumped out roughly 600hp on gas, mated to a shorty power-glide transmission, and a Chrysler 8 3/4″ rear-end with a spool and 4:56 gears. Add a little front axle wing and a Moon fuel tank, and that’s just about as old school as it gets. Sure, there might be a much larger array of parts choices to select nowadays, but back in the 60’s and 70’s, modified production parts were the only commonly available items, so that’s what was widely used.

The car was just about ready to go about a month back, but electrical problems ranging from a junk battery and a fried starter have put a delay on the new setup’s debut, along with a weak fuel pump. In the meantime, we’ll peer around at John’s newest pics, or even checkout some runs with the old setup, on his Youtube Channel. Hopefully John will be able to work out the new gremlins that have arisen with the new setup, and he can hit the track within the Month.
