Francis Johnson Records The First No Boost “Fifty”

As racers such as David Wolfe, Kevin Fiscus, and others pound out mind-numbing elapsed times and speeds from their turbocharged and supercharged Drag Radial combinations, it’s easy to see how the tried-and-true nitrous racers could get lost in the proverbial shuffle. But just because the nitrous contingent is down on performance, doesn’t mean they’ve thrown in the towel. In fact, the creation of a separate “No Boost” category at ORTC and other venues has given these diehard racers their own stage to shine. But if they keep it up, they just might be able to mix it up with the big boys.

Last weekend, nitrous front runner Francis Johnson accomplished what many knew would occur in just a matter of time, as he cranked off the first “fifty” ever by a non-boosted radial tire car – a stout 4.592 at 158.15 mph at the Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek. Johnson’s impressive 2000 Pontiac Firebird is motivated by a Samakow Racing Engines-prepped, 615 cubic inch 4.840 bore space Big Block, with a single carburetor atop a cast intake manifold on three kits of the juice. The numbers on the record-breaking run were 1.117 60′ and 3.033 to half track.
