Flashback Friday: The 1991 TRW Allstars In Columbus

This weekend, the annual JEG’S Allstars event, which brings together the finest sportsman racers from every geographic division in the United States and Canada from among the thousands of NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors, will take place at the Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., part of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 Nationals.

The JEG’S Allstars, as it’s known today, has been a crowning event for the NHRA’s sportsman competitors since its inception more than 25 years ago at the inaugural contest at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, KY. The special race-within-a-race pits the top points earners in every category from Top Alcohol Dragster down to Super Street from each of the seven divisions for fame, fortune, and the equally as valuable bragging rights. Previously backed by TRW Automotive, the Allstars event has called multiple venues home over the years, prior to its current stage at Route 66.

On this Flashback Friday, we take a look back 20 years at the 1991 running of the TRW Allstars, held at the National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Oh. that was televised by Diamond P Sports with color commentary from the late, great Steve Evans and Bob Frey. The ’91 running of the Allstars in Columbus featured some of the stars of the sport of both past and present, including the likes of the late Blaine Johnson and Bill Barney, Mike Ferderer, Garley Daniels, Jeff Taylor, Pro Stock standout Greg Stanfield, Edmond Richardson, and even a young Jeg Coughlin Jr..
