Neal Chance Racing Converters was well represented in victory lane at the JE Pistons NMCA Muscle Car Nationals at Michigan’s Milan Dragway over the weekend, as Robbie Blankenship, Don Baskin, and first-time winner Georgegina Buckley all grabbed titles at the seventh event of the NMCA season.
Blankenship, who headed into Milan as the points leader, qualified second in Pro Stock with an 8.51, setting up a first round match with Pennsylvanian John Langer. In one of the days’ tightest races, Blankenship earned the win with an 8.56. Bur more importantly, title contender Charlie Booze Jr. fell in that opening stanza to Don Bowles, opening the door to Blankenship to open a comfortable margin in the points standings with just one race remaining in the season. And that he did, thanking Bowles with an 8.53 to 8.56 defeat in the second round before edging the always tough Michael DeMayo in the money round.
Buckley, who was competing with the NMCA for the first time in Milan, was one of two Drag Radial cars in attendance. Perennial favorite Jason Lee gained a wide margin in qualifying as his 7.72 led Buckley’s 8.82 by more than a second. And while this one may have seemed a complete mismatch, they don’t run on them paper for a reason. In Sunday’s matchup to decide the title. Lee spun the tires at the hit and couldn’t track down Buckley, who sailed to an 8.35 victory over the charging Lee and his 8.55 effort.
Baskin meanwhile, also the incoming points leader in Mean Street, qualified atop the field once again in his beautiful ’66 Chevy II with a 9.96 and following an opening round bye, took out Doug Johnson in round two to set up a final round matchup with #1 qualifier Shawn Johnson. Baskin saved his best for last, uncorking a 9.90 that despite a great holeshot and 10.01 effort, Johnson just couldn’t track down. With the win, Baskin opened up a nearky insurmountable points lead as the series heads to Indianapolis to close the season.
