In a blockbuster bit of news that quickly transitioned from rumors and speculation to a virtual given in the days leading up to this mornings’ press conference in Boston, NHRA officials made good on their promise nearly two years ago to bring big-time drag racing to the New England region with the announcement that New England Dragway in Epping N.H. will play host the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series in 2013.

The stars of the NHRA Full Throttle Series will visit the New England Dragway for the inaugural New England Nationals on June 20-23, 2013.

The announcement, coming in a scheduled press conference at the Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Boston that included NHRA and NED officials, along with New England native Funny Car competitor Bob Tasca III, was the culmination of more than a decade of work to bring NHRA professional drag racing to the region. already the most geographically diverse for of motorsports in American, the addition of the New England region further solidifies that position.

“This is a landmark announcement for NHRA and the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series,” said Tom Compton, president, NHRA.   “We identified the New England area as one of the primary regions to expand our schedule and today’s announcement is very exciting for everyone involved in NHRA.”

Track officials have already spent the last handful of years completing key improvements to the facility, with the pouring of a new, all-concrete racing surface, the installation of new Musco lighting, construction of a new stand trap, expansion of the pit area, and more. Over the next 12 months, officials will continue to work on capital improvements for the arrival of the biggest drag racing event in its history and in the state of New Hampshire.

“To bring the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series to New England and specifically the state of New Hampshire is very exciting,” said Joe Lombardo, track general manager, New England Dragway. “We have started the process of preparing our facility to host an event of this magnitude and look forward to hosting the stars of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing next June.”

Long synonymous with the IHRA, the New England Dragway switched sanctions and joined forces with the NHRA in 2011 and hosted the NHRA Northeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for the first time last June.

NHRA and New England Dragway officials will make additional announcements regarding sponsors, tickets, and promotional events in the coming weeks and months. Tickets for the New England Nationals are slated to go on sale Tuesday, November 3.
