The drag racing world mourned the loss of Atlanta Dragway when it was sold and closed in 2021. Fans watched as the iconic facility slowly disappeared, with buildings torn down until all that remained were racing memories. Now, thanks to the IHRA, the sound of horsepower could once again fill the air in Commerce, Georgia, as moves are being made to bring Atlanta Dragway back.
Rumblings and rumors had circulated that there was an outside chance Atlanta Dragway could return in 2025 when the IHRA began purchasing facilities. Those whispers grew louder when a tentative IHRA schedule surfaced that included an Atlanta date.

Those rumors have now become very real following a recent Banks County Planning Commission meeting. During the meeting, the commission recommended approval of a conditional use permit that would allow a racetrack to reopen at the former Atlanta Dragway location. The Banks County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to vote on the permit during a meeting on February 10.
This decision accelerates the process of bringing the 318-acre facility back to life as a drag strip. It is also worth noting that there was no opposition to the recommendation of approval during the meeting. If final approval is granted, the door will be fully open for the IHRA to begin work on restoring drag racing to the metro Atlanta region.
We will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
