NHRA VS. NASCAR: Who Will Rule The Softball Field?

Some of the top drivers in the NHRA and the roundy-round world of NASCAR will be  taking the field on Wednesday, April 17. The baseball field that is, to go head-to-head and battle it out in a good old-fashioned game of softball to raise money for charity at CMC-NorthEast Stadium in Kannapolis, N.C.

NHRA Top Fuel driver Bob Vandergriff and NASCAR driver Busch fabricated the idea in an effort to aid designated charities chosen by each team. The NHRA team decided on Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as their recipient while the NASCAR team elected The Armed Forces Foundation.

“A lot of us on the NHRA and NASCAR sides of racing know each other, but our hectic racing schedules don’t allow us to get together very often,” Vandergriff said. “Kurt and I started talking about this, and before you knew it, we had a plan, then we were talking to our fellow drivers in each series, and it all started to come together. Early on in the process, the Kannapolis Intimidators minor league baseball team came onboard, and once we had a professional venue in place, we knew we could make this happen. Our NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series will be at zMAX Dragway in Concord on April 19-21 for the Dollar General Four-Wide Nationals, so that gave our drivers a chance to all come in a little early to do this, have some fun, raise some donations, and promote our sport.

Numerous names from both genres of racing have committed to the game and more may be joining the cause in the future. The NHRA line-up currently includes Top Fuel stars Tony Schumacher, Brandon Bernstein, Antron Brown, J.R. Todd, Shawn Langdon, Clay Millican, and Vandergriff Jr. Joining them on the action will also be Courtney Force, Ron Capps, Del Worsham, Chad Head, and Matt Hagan from the Funny Car world.

The circle-track team includes Kurt Busch, Martin Truex Jr., Clint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Michael Waltrip, Darrell Waltrip, David Ragan, Brad Sweet, and Parker Kligerman.

Who will be the victor time will soon tell, but it’s probably a good thing that second, third, and home lay to the left. At least the NASCAR guys won’t get confused.
