Back in March we had the opportunity to visit with one of our partner manufacturers, ProTorque Converters, in Bohemia, New York, to take a tour of their facility. At the time, ProTorque’s main man, Joe Rivera, Jr. showed us a sneak-peek at a torque converter design that the company was working on, but was not ready to release at that time.
We’re happy to report that some progress has been made, as a number of racers on Team ProTorque have been testing the unit over the last several months in an effort to flesh out its performance. Mo Hall, Tom Kempf, and Nick Agostino have all been using them in the Outlaw 10.5 ranks.
Hall’s Fulton-powered nitrous machine qualified number one and took home the win at last weekend’s Outlaws at Atco race in New Jersey, in the process running an insane 1.01 short time and 4.10 at 185 MPH in the eighth-mile!
Kempf has also been tearing up the track as of late, breaking the eighth-mile LSX record with an outstanding 4.31 at 179 MPH using the new converter design.
Rivera doesn’t want to limit the testing, though, so he’s got the converters installed into a number of Pro Mod machines as well. Names like Bill Lutz, Kevin Fiscus, Jose Gonzalez, Chip King, and Troy Coughlin are all testing the new design, which consists of a lightweight, press-fit spline drive system that reduces the rotating mass of the torque converter and allows the engine to accelerate more quickly. The result of that quicker engine acceleration has been decreased 60-foot times, and all of the teams using the converter are reported to be pleased with its performance.
Keep tuned to the ProTorque website, where you’ll surely be hearing more about this new converters in the months to come!
