V&P Racing’s New Drag Radial Regal T-Type

When the Buick Regal T Type rolled onto the showroom floors in 1987 it led the way with an alternative to the low-output V8’s of the era with a high-rpm turbocharged V6, that was grossly underrated. Naturally these 2 door rocket-ships took up quite the aftermarket following and are still highly desired vehicles to this day, and when V&P Racing sought after a chassis for their 275/315 drag radial build they chose the iconic T type. It won’t be powered by a V6 motor however, as the team has recently removed their 477 Big Block Chevy out in favor of a lighter, small block package.

For more info on this car, as well as the many others they build, you can visit their website at vandpracing.com.

While the original motor would have been force-fed by a small Garrett turbocharger, this all aluminum SB2 headed small block motor will be crammed with boost from one of the most monstrous turbochargers you can buy from Precision today – a 114mm. The biggest projected advantage with this new combo versus their old will be the almost 300 pounds of weight they will shed off the nose of the car, along with an overall package that can move more air quicker. Supporting modifications for the swap such as headers, crossover pipe and custom intake elbow will all be completed by V&P. Another significant changeover from the big block setup will be the addition of EFI and removal of the carburetor setup, going with a Big Stuff 3 system that’ll control the 160lb injectors.

By late February the team hopes to be out testing in preparation to compete in a Kansas City 275 drag radial class as well as a 88mm reduced class at Ozark. Tim at V&P will also be bringing out his own LSx-powered 1979 Pinto that will race alongside the Buick in their Midwest events. V&P Racing will be represented at the strip by some unique hotrods this year as well as what looks to be some killer combinations.
