There will be supercharged Pro Mods competing at the Auto Club Dragway in Fontana this season, after all.
Just a couple of weeks back, we reported that roots-blown Pro Modifieds had, at least for the time being, been denied entering events at the beleaguered southern California quarter mile after failing to come in under the county-mandated decibel level requirement that was negotiated as part of the agreement to re-open the track.
NMCA WEST Pro Modified regular and longtime west coast hitter John Scialpi was the guinea pig for that initial test that involved support staff from Flowmaster, who had worked to develop a solution that would bring the loudest of all doorslammers in under the mark. After surpassing the decibel limit, Flowmaster’s Ronnie Olson and the exhaust manufacturers’ engineers went back to the drawing board with a mission to gain entry for blown racers to compete alongside their turbocharged and nitrous-assisted counterparts.

In short order, Flowmaster, Scialpi, and Auto Club Dragway officials were ready to test the waters again, and this time the result was a certifiable thumbs-up during a test on Sunday, as the prototype baffle/muffler that Flowmaster came up with kept the sound levels within the stringent sound test required of the facility. As such, Scialpi is now approved to compete in Pro Modified at the NMCA WEST’s season opener later this month, as well as subsequent races in June and October.
