Steve Block, founder of Grab-A-Lane.com, put together their second Annual Street Car Shootout for June 11th with some simple rules and a $200.00 buy in. This involved a typical street car with stock suspension and a limited tire size with stock appearing dash and no wheelie bars. About 12 cars showed interest in coming but only three made it to the track on race day; those being Shawn Byrne, Trey Killgo and Blair Brannock.

Shawn has a ’99 Mustang with a turbocharged 5.4 2V Mod motor and ran some nice mid eight-second passes during the test session. Trey runs a Fox body Mustang with a small block nitrous setup and Blair has a little 347 with a single turbo. Dave Chapman and Jim Braun helped Steve with photos and setting up GoPro camera’s on the cars throughout the day and Steve will be editing a video of the event from all the footage taken that can be seen later this week on Grab-A-Lane.com.

8:30 AM at Bradenton with Joe Erwin, Mike Perrella, Aaron Gramer, Blair Brannock, Matt Larue, Rob Cossack and Alex Smith from left to right.
Brannock's "Little Blue" has a turbocharged 347 built by Scotty's Racing Technology and tuned by Job Spetter of Turbo People. The car has been 8 teens @ 173 in NMRA True Street and was a favorite going into the race.
Trey Killgo (aka: Blurrbo'd) also has a clean blue notchback but runs a nitrous sniffing SBF now after having a turbocharged combo previously in another car.
Here Shawn Byrne launches hard on his was way to a mid eight-second run. the 2V powered Mustang has a PT 47/ 88 MM turbo pushing over 30 pounds of boost. Shawn set the modular 2V record in April at Silver Dollar Raceway with an 8.63 @ 162.6 MPH.

Joe Irwin from Fast Forward Race Engines was on hand to help who ever needed some and we discovered a bad crank trigger sending unit on Brannock’s Little Blue after two disappointing hits. This was the first time out in just over a year for Brannock after the 2010 NMCA/NMRA AllStar race in Commerce, Georgia. His best run Saturday was a 9.21, giving lane choice to Byrne after Killgo spun a bearing forcing him to sit out.

Brannock got out first in a tight race to the eighth mile but got loose as the boost came in and nearly brushed the wall, doing a great job to save the car. Meanwhile, Byrne had an injector come loose leaking fuel, which caused a fire. He crossed the stripe first for the win, got the car stopped and was out safely with a fire extinguisher to do what he could and the track personnel were able to douse the flames before the car was a total loss. We’re just glad no one was injured thanks to some quick thinking and great driving by both participants.

Stay tuned, as Block plans on organizing another Grab-A-Lane shootout before the end of the year with a full 16-car field. The Grab-A-Lane Street Car Shootout is an event he would like to host several times a year.
