Oklahoma’s Tulsa Raceway Park played host to the first major heads-up drag racing event in two months over the weekend after it was granted approval to contest its annual spring Throwdown in T-Town amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has shuttered racetracks and halted championship seasons in their tracks. The Throwdown, headlined by the Midwest Pro Mod Series’ season opener, also featured competition in X275, Top Dragster, and Top Sportsman.

Reigning MWPMS champion Aaron Wells continued right where he left off, qualifying atop the stout 28-car field with a 3.66; Wayne Roberts anchored the show with a 3.91. Using a series of 3.6-second laps in eliminations, Wells trumped over Judd Coffman in the finale with a 3.64. In the Slammers class, comprised of non-qualifiers and first round losers, Craig Sullivan, who qualified fourth in the main field with a 3.72, powered to victory over Adam Flamholc with a 3.72 to Adam’s slowing 4.24.

Bob Bales led a 14-car field of X275 entries into eliminations with a 4.39 from his Pontiac Trans Am, with after the dust settled early Sunday morning, it was No. 2 qualifier Clint Downs hoisting the hardware following a tight 4.38 to 4.39 victory over Brian Brooks.
