NHRA: Event recap and Dragzine’s own Race Wrap from Joliet. Track records were shattered and Allstars were crowned during a busy and exciting weekend of racing at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Route 66 Nationals at the Route 66 Raceway just outside Chicago over the weekend. In Top Fuel, hometown boy Tony Schumacher denied Clay Millican of his first NHRA victory, defeating the former IHRA champ in a wild, engine-exploding affair. Schumacher’s Funny Car teammate, Matt Hagan, turned back a red-hot John Force in the final, 4.06 to 4.11. In Pro Stock, Jeg Coughlin defeated mail order rival Greg Anderson in the final round for his second victory of the season, and Michal Ray scored his second career win and first of 2013 with a defeat of former boss Matt Smith in the Pro Stock Motorcycle finale. On Saturday, the North Central division defended their home turf in the JEGS Allstars event, scoring a decisive team victory. ADRL: Alex Hossler dominated Pro Extreme from wire-to-wire at the ADRL Summer Drags IX at the U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan, qualifying No. 1 and running in the 3.50’s three times during the weekend, including the final, to score a win over Tommy D’Aprile. In Pro Nitrous, Steve Jackson came from the No. 4 qualifying slot to earn another series victory, this time with a 3.83 to 3.90 defeat of Tommy Franklin. Pro Modified, featuring a full 16-car field, came down to an epic final round in which Rickie Smith and Jimmy Keen ran identical 3.890-second elapsed times, with Smith’s .029 to .035 holeshot advantage being the difference. IHRA Division 3: Jacob Elrod scored a close Top Dragster victory over Jeff Thomas on day one of the IHRA North Stars Pro-Am race at the London Dragway in Kentucky to join Top Sportsman champ Mark Sanders. In the second event of the weekend, Todd Strefling was on the winning end of a double red-light final in Top Dragster to defeat opponent Chris Cadle, and Rube Allman was dead-on his 4.75 dial with a 4.751 to score the Top Sportsman crown. IHRA Division 9: Michael White won a double-breakout finale against Greg Smith in the day one Top Dragster final at the IHRA Raiders Division 9 event at the Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina, joining Top Sportsman winner Mike White, who was better on both ends of the race track than opponent Tim Fields. On day two, David Barr denied Greg Smith for the second day in a row of victory in Top Dragster, while Rick Whaley put together an impressive .011 package in the Top Sportsman final for the win. MIRock: Scottie Keller was second off the starting line but benefited from Michael Rankin’s breakout in the Top Sportsman final to earn the class crown at the Adams Performance Summer Sizzler in Rockingham over the weekend.
