IHRA Faces Growing Uncertainty Following Schedule Changes, Employee Departures

The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) appears to be facing one of the most uncertain periods in its recent history.

Over the past several weeks, the organization has announced multiple changes to its 2026 schedule, including the removal of several events from the Outlaw Nitro Series and confirmation that Atlanta Dragway and Memphis International Raceway would not host national events this season.

Now, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation, significant staffing changes have taken place inside the organization. Dragzine has been told that numerous IHRA employees have been laid off in recent days, although the organization has not publicly confirmed the scope of those personnel changes.

Several independent sources have also indicated that additional announcements affecting IHRA’s drag racing operations could come in the coming days. At this time, Dragzine has not independently confirmed those reports, and the IHRA has not publicly commented.

The developments come just months after one of the most ambitious expansion efforts in modern motorsports.

After acquiring the IHRA in late 2024, owner Darryl Cuttell launched an aggressive growth strategy that extended well beyond traditional drag racing. The organization acquired multiple racing facilities, expanded into tractor pulling, offshore powerboat racing, stock car competition, and other motorsports disciplines, while simultaneously investing in new racing series and event properties.

The pace of that expansion drew significant attention throughout the motorsports industry. At the same time, the organization experienced considerable executive turnover during the past year as it attempted to build its new business model.

While recent schedule revisions were publicly described as operational restructuring intended to position the organization for future growth, the latest reports suggest the challenges may extend beyond previously announced changes.

Dragzine has reached out to IHRA officials for comment and will update this story as additional information becomes available.

This remains a developing story.
