NMCA Bradenton 2012 Same Day Coverage

Rob Cossack
March 15, 2012

Sunday promises to be a great day of racing with weather to match. Extreme Street is looking to have some good competition along with Mickey Thompson 10.5. With the sun out most of yesterday the track was a bit tricky, today has some scattered cloud cover so things may be a bit better suited if it keeps up through the day. If the track holds it there may be some five second runs in Pro Street so stay tuned through the day for updates.

Special thanks to our event coverage sponsor Mickey Thompson Tires, check them out at www.mickeythompsontires.com

During qualifying Willard Kinzer dropped a valve, which has been traced o a bad first gear in the transmission. The engine was fixed up last night with a set of spare heads. Jeff Lutz is shown here buttoning up the trans this morning so hey will be ready for first round of Super Street 10.5.

Dave Hatnick runs this 4th Gen Camaro in Xtreme Street which debuted in Bowling Green last year. In testing Saturday to a 7.97 and qualified second with an 8.09 @ 173. David runs a BTR built 523 BBC on nitrous which is a standard for the class, also running BTR solenoids. Kevin Stevens from High Anxiety Racecraft is responsible for the build and chassis set up.
Eric Kenward lost a piston in the final session of 275 Drag Radial last night. Kenward and Atillio DeRosa pulled the engine and replaced it with a spare as many hard core nitrous racers often do, assorted parts on hand are a must when playing with the giggle gas. He is all fixed up and looking for some 7.70's today.

Fred Brunn runs Xtreme Street with this 69 Camaro built by Bill Lee Race Cars in Palmetto, Florida. originally built in 2008 this is the first time the car he has been out with this car in two years. The engine is a 522 built in house by Fred with only one full hit in the 1/4 so far this weekend and four hits total.

Mike Stavrinos did his job on the tree and ran his best of the weekend but it's wasn't enough to hold off Jimmy Keen's 231 MPH top end, still a good showing for a brand new ride. Josh Green hung Vinnie DeMieri out some at the line with both drivers going red and the 18 year old green taking the round.

Kinzer had a single this round putting up a 6.84 @ 224, very good run esp considering the work that it took getting the car back together. Brian Hicks put his twin turbocharged Mopar into the sixes with a round win over local racer John Lastinger. Top qualifier Laferriere set low ET for the round just quicker than Murrillo

They say a picture tells a thousand words and this one certainly does as Murillo gave it too much too soon allowing Willard Kinzer to slip by as the PTP racing crew set the Mustang up to leave a bit soft as the track conditions were not the best this afternoon. It was a well deserved win for the team after hurting the engine Friday night and missing any qualifying attempts Saturday while making repairs to the car.

It’s day two of the season opener for the NMCA with today having two rounds of qualifying under Florida’s sunny skies. Quite a few racers were having issues with the hot track surface yesterday and some will likely experience similar situations today, while the ones that get it figured out will be rewarded with a better position in the field.

Dan Kroll made the tow from Illinois for Extreme Street with his Nitrous assisted Mustang. His infamous Nova has been retired from NMCA and currently makes the rounds n assorted leaf spring class racing. He is sporting a fresh bullet from Automotive Engine Specialties out of Elk Grove Village, Illinois with an aluminum block 582 and the new Edelbrock SV 632 Intake topped with a fogger set up by Induction Solutions. A Proformance Transmission send the estimated 1100 HP to the rear.
Chris Rini and crew were unloading the current Pro Street low qualifier this morning and scraping some old rubber off the tubs under the car. New things for 2012 include a new intake on top of the Buck Racing Engine with a switch to Monte Smith Performance nitrous plumbing using Nitrous Oxide Systems components and new design stainless header from Kooks which has allowed the car to keep the rear tires planted a bit better so far. The team has retained all the sponsors from last year including JRI Shocks, Ross Pistons, Baskin Truck Sales, Lithium Pro Batteries and of course ATI. As a side note Rini was on just three kits yesterday with a fourth on tap.
Both of the PTP performance cars out of the Kinzer camp lost valves during Friday's qualifying session. They were not back yet this morning with the parts to make repairs to either car but hope to get things buttoned up to make the final session tonight. Shown is Willard's twin turbo Mustang running in Mickey Thompson 10.5, while the Procharged Cobalt sits under a cover.

Keith Valone rolled the beams during pro Street qualifying last night so today will be his first attempt. They were setting the fuel pressure this morning when we stopped by. Keith has been running this 565 from Total Engine Concepts since last season and should be the last race with it before upgrading to a TEC 714 which they hope will be ready to rock for the Atlanta NMCA/NMRA All Star race in April.
Robbie Blankenship was on of the racers struggling with traction yesterday so he switched out to some fresh Mickeys for today. There are no real changes to the program for this year besides running as many NMCA events as he can Blankenship also plans to run some races in a new NA 10.5 class. Sponsors include Mickey Thompson tires, Quick Fuel Technologies, Roush Performance and Bayonet Performance.

Chris Rini ran the table in qualifying and put up a 6.03 @ 235 in the final session. He lost a valve on the last run and they have last years engine as a spare installed in the car already so they will be ready for eliminations tomorrow.

Lutz has high MPH during qualifying with Demieri and Keen close behind that should make some good racing tomorrow.

Murillo and Meshaw are always big threats and they are both running well this weekend. Local racer John Lastinger is a little off the pace with a 7.51 but you can't win if you don't show up. Also as mentioned earlier Willard Kinzer had dropped a valve in his Mustang, the good news to the team is they are buttoning things up now and should have the fired up before midnight.

Jason Lee has a wide margin of error tomorrow with over two tenths on the field in Drag Radial, only Fratena is close on MPH but has yet to figure out the front half. Eric Kenward is having good results at his first NMCA race running consistent 7.80's. Sean Ashe got one 300 foot hit last night but lost both attempts today as an electrical gremlin is allowing the car to roll the beams on the transbrake. Sean and Jason Gatlin are tracing down the problem now.

MIke Stavrinos is debuting his new car this weekend at the Season opener for the NMCA. The car was built by Sheppard Race cars and has a Nelson Competition 800+ cubic inch big block Chevy on nitrous for power. Kooks Custom Headers has come on board as a major sponsor for the Stavrinos Motorsports Camaro. Special thanks to brother Deano, Randy Chris Nelson, Chris at Sheppard Race Cars and everyone else that did their part in the build. They have run some 4.0 hits to the 1/8 mile and ran a low 6 clicking it a little early today during testing.
Team Green is here debuting a new car fresh out of Bickel Race Cars. They did some testing yesterday with "pleasing results" said team owner Dan Green. His son Josh is just 18 and has been racing for two years. The engine is a natrually aspirated 894 from Steve Schmidt and will be competing on Pro Street.
Mike Fratena came out to run in Drag Radial this weekend bringing out the crew along to help out.Mike decided to dump the blow through set up last year and has had success with fuel injection since with Cal Hartline on board to tune the small block turbocharged third gen Camaro. From left to right Peg Fratena, Randy Fratena, MIke Fratena, Cal Hartline and friend Brian.
Another newcomer to NMCA this weekend is Shawn Ashe. He is another X275 racer coming to test the waters in NMCA Drag radial. He hurt his small block Chevy testing recently at PBIR and since Jason Gatlin from ATF Speed built the car and provides the trans and converters among other things they stuffed one of Jim Blair's spare engines in. They have working hard at it for a couple weeks to make the change and pulled an all nighter to get here this afternoon after firing up the engine at 2 AM. A custom front motor plate was whipped up by Gatlin to convert the F1-X Chevy gear drive to bolt to the Ford engine, which will be available to anyone, including digitizing your current plate.
Jason Carter is back on the scene in Super Street OL 10.5 with the tried and true Malibu. He is running the same twin turbo BBC as before and Eric LeFerrier will be driving this year as well.
Kentuckey racer Danny Shemwell is here in XS running his GTO with a new 525 BBC from BES. The crew includes Lynn Yonts, Jesse Coulter with Hank Hill from Hooked up and Gone Race Cars.
Eric Kenward is here trying out the Drag Radial class with his Malibu wagon. He normally runs X275 and G-body events. Some weight reduction was done recently with flush mount lexan rear glass and a fiberglass tailgate.By removing about 90 pounds from the back of the car the front to rear bias is improved from before which should help to keep the front on the ground. He runs a Nelson Competition small block Chevy with Trick Flow 18 degree heads and Wilson Nitrous, a lithium 960 series battery from Pro Lite.

A new piece on the car is a prototype carbon front motor plate from Ultra Carbon in Washington State. Testing today resulted in a 5.05 1/8th with a high seven through the top end.
