There’s no more fitting a place for the sun to rise on the NHRA drag racing season than in the Sunshine State, where many of the top nitro teams in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series are tearing up the Palm Beach International Raceway this week as they make preparations for upcoming start to the new season and a run at championship glory. After days of private testing, PBIR will open the gates on Friday and Saturday evening for the public and the media with side-by-side runs under the lights. Dragzine will be on hand bringing you a glimpse at all of the new-look race teams and paint schemes for the new year, so keep it right here for coverage and tons of photos over the next two days.

As always, a big shout out to the presenting sponsor our of year-long event coverage, Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels. For all of your high performance and racing tire and wheel needs, visit Mickey Thompson!

Before we get into the racing results we'll lead off with Brittany Force's new car in the John Force racing camp. First off, it's not a funny car, Brittany will pilot a Top Fuel dragster this year for Force Racing as part of a four car effort including John Force, Courtney Force and Robert Hight. The car is a new state of the art chassis with a canopy. She made a nice 3.860 @ 290.88 MPH shutting it down a little early in the first session.
Del Worsham is back at it in funny Car for the 2013 season behind the wheel of the DHL sponsored Toyota Camry. His first run of the session was a clean 4.067 @ 311.34 MPH while paired with new driver Chad Head driving his father Jim's car this year.
A nice showing for the first pair out gave a nice side by side match with Head getting the better ET running a 4.061 @ 313.15 MPH including a very nice .891 60’. He is seen here heating up the tires.
Bob Tasca III put up a 4.073 @ 315.42 MPH in the Motorcraft sponsored Mustang next to Alexis DeJoria for another set of side by side, clean runs.
Ypsilanti Michigan’s Alexis DeJoria drove the Patron Tequila sponsored 2012 Toyota Camry to a 4.081 @ 308.21 MPH just behind Tasca.

John Force was driving sans graphics today in a plain carbon body that has yet to see paint. His first run kicked the tires, he made up for that later, running a 4.053 @ 308.35 MPH on a single run.
Matt Hagan ripped off a 4.060 @ 312.21 MPH earning him low ET so far in his 2012 Dodge Charger backed by Rocky.

Johnny Gray’s 4.066 @ 311.92 MPH put him fourth of eight Funny cars Cars to run so far with the Valvoline backed Mopar.
Robert Hight sat next to Gray and unleashed a 4.04 @ 315.56 MPH making him the quickest car in the session putting the John Force Racing Mustang, the AAA Auto Club of Southern California and Castrol out front early this weekend.

Traxxas is back for 2013 on Courtney Force’s 2012 Mustang. She was paired with Cruz Pedregon but lost traction very early in the run, clicking it off with a 7.505 @ 76.25 MPH. Pedregon’s 2012 Toyota Camry is backed by Snap On Tools. He managed a 4.106 @ 297.61 MPH, also clicking it early but a good run never the less.
2012 Funny Car Champion Jack Beckman’s ride sports Valvoline Nextgen colors along with sponsorship from Mail Terminal Services Mail for Wounded Veterans project. His 4.160 @ 307.16 MPH run was only good for tenth in the session, however going A to B is mostly what the teams concentrate on.
He was paired with number two man Ron Capps who put up a 4.075 @ 316.52 MPH run for the NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger for some good side by side action.

Leah Pruett (near lane) just finished her crossover license for Top Fuel and was half the first pair out matched with another rookie driver coming up from the Top Alcohol Dragster ranks, Sidnei Firgo. Pruett is driving for Dote Racing this year after driving a Pro Mod for Roger Burgess who has parted out his operation. Firgo drives for ArtiVinco Racing with Donnie Bender handling tuning for the team. Both cars made good runs with Pruett getting the edge in performance running a 3.850 @ 307.16 to Firgo’s 3.883 @ 318.24 MPH pass.

Doug Kalitta got behind the wheels of Morgan Lucas’ “Nitro Banana” after he had to leave early today. Kalitta lost traction and shut down the Lucas Oil/Geico digger early coasting to a 6.860 @ 92.87 MPH.
Bob Vandergriff had a clean straight run to the tune of 3.825 @ 321.50 MPH bumping Pruett to second fastest.

Clay Millican ran just off his teammate Bob Vandergriff with a 3.828 @ 321.42 MPH for the C&J Energy Services sponsored team. Nice consistent runs for them this session.

Brittany Force ran next to Millican putting up the aforementioned 3.860 @ 290.88 MPH run.
Antron Brown has a canopy affixed for 2013 on the Matco Tool’s, Toyota, US Army Top Fuel Dragster. A 3.860 @ 302.28 MPH was the result of this pass, the lower MPH shows he clicked it early in the run.

Tony Schumacher put the US Army car on the pole with a excellent 3.776 @ 324.59 MPH run.
The final pair of the session was Doug Kalitta and David Grubnic with Kalitta kicking Shumacher back to second after running a fine 3.759 @ 328.30 MPH blast in the Mac Tools sponsored car.
Grubnic’s 3.870 @ 271.08 MPH pass was eighth quick for the Optima Batteries car so far.

Between session the drivers get to relax, mingle with fans and sigh some autographs. Courtney Force had a good crowd gathered around and was kind enough to stand still for this shot. Her 4.018 @ 322.73 MPH was the best of the night and a new Funny Car track record. We will see Sunday if she, or anyone else can break into the three second zone.
Robert Hight was paired with teammate Courtney Force in a great side by side matchup. His 4.021 @ 318.24 put him second quick and showed the consistancy of the John Force Racing team based out of Yorba Linda, California.

Fans often crowd around as the various teams warm up the cars but soon scatter as the nitro fumes are too much for most everyone without a mask. Brittany Force was fourth quick in the second session with a good 3.796 @ 324.36 MPH while paired with Clay Millican.
Leah Pruett is another female driver moving up to Top Fuel with Dote Racing. She managed to 3.85's Saturday but lost traction on her final run in the second public session slowing to a 4.279 @ 188.07 MPH.

Top Fuel rookie Chad Head put down a good 4.074 @ 313.51MPH pass moving over towards the wall on the top end and did a nice job getting it back to the center and getting shut down safely. That run was good for fifth in the final session of the night.

John Force was the last Funny Car down and put up a 4.053 @ 308.35 MPH run taking third spot and putting John Force Racing in the top three spots in Funny Car.
Doug Kalitta was again driving Morgan Lucas' ride putting up a 3.787 @ 322.58 MPH, good for third quick in the session for team Geico.
David Grubnic again had to shut down early facing traction issues. He managed a 3.970 @ 225.79 on this run.

Saturday’s PRO Winter Warmup  has been cancelled due to rain.
