Shakedown Nationals Same Day Coverage From Englishtown

Todd Dziadosz
October 13, 2012

Welcome to SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY SUNDAY! The staging lanes are starting to fill with 8.50 Index racers. A planned 9:15 start will begin the day. 6 classes will get one last shot, a short intermission, and then a projected 11:30 for round 1. Pro Mod will start eliminations, followed by Outlaw 10.5, Top Sportsman, 8.50 Index, X275. Those getting last chance shots today are in order: 8.50 Index, X275, Unlimited Street, Street Bike, TS, and Pro Import.
You’ve heard this before, “We are down for cleanup.” During last ditch X275 qualifying, and we are behind again. We will be lucky to get the day finished before the 7PM curfew, but rest assured the Raceway Park crew is trying their hearts out to get the show in. Cloudy conditions are greeting fans and racers, so records are possible. Jose Gonzalez is one to watch in round1 of Pro Mod along with Mike Maggio in the high mph PM Camaro, and Tim Lynch in 10.5
Kevin Fiscus is race ready in his #2 qualified Mustang at 4.312. First round opponent for Kevin is John Bova.

George Williams scored an upset round 1 win in Pro Mod over Derek Hawker to advance to round 2 and face Bill Lutz in a Camaro battle to advance to the semis. Williams got in as an alternate for Randy Jewell.

A crewman for Tom Tarsia’s NY Camaro readies for first round. Tarsia took out Chris Cadotte’s Dodge truck in Heavy Street action.

Mitch George soloed for a first round victory when his opponent was a no show. George is another past winner here at Shakedown, but also a crash survivor, when he crashed the Monte Carlo after taking the final round several years ago.
Heavy Street round1 saw Tony Bass score a close win over Steve Wolley in a battle of Novas.
The scoreboard tells the tale of Todd Tutterow, in the Precision Turbo-owned 70 Duster, as he recorded the fastest pass in Pro Mod history at 262.49 MPH. The NHRA record stands at 258.71 with Melanie Troxel set during the Supernationals 2011. Troxel was driving a turbocharged 53 Corvette on her record run, also set here at Englishtown,NJ. The Tutterow run included a pedal job downtrack, as evidenced by the relatively slow ET during the run. However you can't discount the power and top end charge of Precision's turbos. Tutterow had problems and lost second round to Kevin McCurdy after having a difficult time both in the burnout and staging.

Limited Street racer Scotty Guadagno was having problems running in the 4.70 range Saturday. This was taken before the final attempt Sunday morning. Scotty was hoping for 4.40s, but on this pass got into the field at the #4 spot in the 4.50 zone. He parlayed that into a long run Sunday afternoon/ evening, taking home the gold in Limited Street by taking out a no- show Paul Major who suffered a Friday fire and withdrew, Bill Dutka in round 2, Scott Bitzer in the semi-finals, and Ray Royer Jr in the final.
Another huge upset occured in Outlaw 10.5 when Harry Jarvis took his rebuilt 69 Camaro to the win over a tire-spinning Tim Lynch in round 2. Lynch started Sunday as the #1 qualifier at 4.02, taking an easy win in round 1 over Tim Essick with a 4.13.But the Corvette spun the tires hard at the 200 foot mark, and Jarvis streaked the win with a 4.30/180 to Lynch's 5.436. Jarvis held a .045 to .087 advantage off the line. Harry met up with Rob Wells in the next round but red-lit, advancing Wells. Jarvis' Camaro has had several scrapes with wall recently, crashing at Yellow Bullet Nationals, and then again testing at Atco.

Bill Dutka was one of many racers at Shakedown to record a personal best ET. He recorded a 4.547/174.89 during the second round but still came up short to eventual champ Scotty G. Dutka is a regular at the Cecil County Saturday Streetcar Shootouts as well as at MIR, Atco, and here at Etown.

Rich Bruder is a defending champion here at Shakedown Nationals. He’s in the semis and will face C Walls in X275 class.
Scott Bitzer provided one of the biggest upsets of the day, when he finished off a wheelstanding Frank Soldridge in round 2 of Limited Street. Frank went into a giant wheelie at the 300 foot mark, scraping the bump and having to lift, advancing Bitzer. Here he comes out of the water in his semi final round against eventual winner Scotty G.
Tony Presto in the blown and blue 67 Nova earned a birth into the final of Heavy Street after taking the win over Ralph Hardesty here in the semi-finals. Presto ran in the 4.40 range the first two rounds with a best of 4.475, and used a 4.513 to best Hardesty who ran 4.842. Presto was misidentified on the qualfying and results sheets as Tony Basso.
The kid is a driver was heard several times over the weekend, as TJ Casper made a run to the round of 4 in Outlaw 10.5. He recorded top speed for the class at 201.25 mph and was a genuine threat to win the deal. He had a 4.0 car, but ran into Charlie Dolbin in the semis, where Dolbin's better reaction time and better ET was the difference. The crew from Deptford, NJ can hold their heads high after this weekend. Casper's father Tom also competed in Outlaw 10.5 with a similar turbo Mustang.
Mitch George used a stellar .002 reaction time in his semi-final run against John Cerbone to earn his way to the Heavy Street final. He flame-belching Monte Carlo held on for the holeshot win over the Camaro. George and Bruder both had shots to defend their 2011 Shakedown titles, but the money was split in several classes due to the late hour and Sunday 7:30 pm curfew.
Joe Allbrecht in the Monte Carlo took this semi-final win over Mark Pyott in 8.50 Index. A holeshot advantage was the difference, despite Mike Pyott running closer to the 8.50 standard. The 8.50 purse was another class that had to split the money.
Bobby Moran Jr was the other semi-finalist in 8.50 Index with his Vega. Here is his winning run against Angelo Valla during round 4.
Limited Street- Scotty Guadagno took his Brooklyn based nitrous powered Camaro to the winner circle, defeating Ray Royer Jr. Scotty G. turned on the win light with a 4.604/162.49 pass, and Royer trailed at 4.690/165.90.

Pro Mod- Eric Latino scored one for the Canadians running 6.0111/243 in the final over a red-lighting Dwayne Wolfe. Wolfe recorded a 6.120/231 for runner up money.
Pro Street Bike final- Jeremy Teasley defeated Joey Gladstone with 6.970/212.66. Gladstone was close with a 7.141/211.06 pass.
Outlaw 10.5- Rob Wells scored paydirt in Outlaw 10.5 action, outrunning Charlie Dolbin. Wells recorded a winning 4.150/189.20 for the victory.
Rich Bruder recorded a 4.660/157 in the semis over an off pace Craig Walls. Bruder scored the X275 title last year and was looking good to do it again.
X275- Final round was not run due to running past curfew. Semi-final winners were Sean Ashe in an 85 Mustang and defending champion Rich Bruder in an 88 Mustang.
Top Sportsman- Wayne Horton 98 Olds Cutlass won the title over the Dodge Avenger of Alan Prusiensky with a winning 4.662 and a .003 reaction time.
Pro Imports were also at Shakedown, although they too split the purse. Here is semi-final action with Jorge Juarbe taking the win and setting low ET/ top speed of the event. The numbers for the 82 Toyota Carolla were 6.505/217.74.
One of the most storied race tracks on the East Coast, Old Bridge Township Raceway Park proved once again to be the record-breaking facility it has always been known to be. Shakedown Nationals 10, under the guidance of promoter Dave Hance and Michelle Marchase and Eddie Krawiec of RP and the entire staff gave racers the chance to strut their stuff. Raceway Park gave their best even when facing a computer crisis that fried several computer parts, pieces and scoreboards. A big thanks to RP for not giving up!

It’s day two at the Shakedown Nationals, and business is about to pick up as the remaining categories, headlined by the supercharged, turbocharged, and nitrous-fed Pro Modifieds and Outlaw 10.5. Three qualifying sessions are on tap today under potentially record-setting conditions, which will set the field for tomorrow’s eliminations.

Early morning shadows from spectators as the teams unload for Saturday's action here at Shakedown Nationals. The conditions are at 1400 feet below sea level and low 40% humidity.
Dave Hance and Bubba Corzine conduct the drivers meeting prior to Saturday morning qualifying sessions. They were going over procedures for the event and class rotation. NHRA Tech is also onsite to conduct chassis certs if needed.
Richard Sexton sips some coffee during the driver meeting. He was testing until yesterday, but had a tough time getting a good run in at MIR. Sexton has been a previous Outlaw 10.5 #1 qualifier at Shakedown.
Jason Enos' crew readies for battle this morning. Enos is pitted next to Tim Lynch. Expect the pair of twin turbo runners to take advantage of today's 1400 feet below conditions and set records in Outlaw 10.5. They will be the third class out today in the rotation.
Donnie Walsh has his NHRA Pro Mod on the grounds to tackle the record books here at Etown.Pro Mod runs 5th in the run order.

Tim Lynch matched his testing numbers from MIR during the week. He planned a “see what the track takes” pass, and he legged it out to a #1 4.024/192.96 to pace the Outlaw 10.5 field of 27 cars.
Anthony DiSomma has top speed in Outlaw 10.5 with a 193.88 mph squirt. He sits #4 in the class at 4.186.

Joe Newsham is #10 in his Sicklerville, NJ based 92 Camaro in Outlaw 10.5 at 4.29/185. Newsham crashed heavily a few years ago with a turbo Mustang.

Rob Wells heats the tires in Outlaw 10.5. His first hit yielded a #7 4.254/182 run.

John Schroeder waits in the lanes before Heavy Street this morning. He made a nice #2 4.469/164 pass with his 2002 Camaro.
Jason Enos is #5 during session 1 at 4.188/190 with his 67 Mustang.

Chris Cadotte of Westland, MI sits on the HS bump after 1, with a 5.663/117 pass after smoking the tires at the tree and getting back on the loud pedal.

We are in the middle of Pro Mod session 1 and the track timing computer had a problem. Lots of Pro Mods are in the lanes ready to go, Right now it's a wait and see, as the track crew is doing their best to replace the parts and get us back up and running.

Jose Gonzalez in El General shocked the troups with his first out of the box 5.78 pass. Only a few PM cars have made a pass during the first session, as the track is trying to fix a computer/ scoreboard problem.

Bill Lutz from Ohio, made a good 5.95/249 run, even though it was anything but perfect. Lutz has history at the Shakedown, winning about 5 years ago in a single turbo Camaro. Lutz would love to earn another title here at Etown.

Al Tucci, Walter Frey (PA announcer from Raceway Park) and Bill Lutz talk about Lutz' run during session 1.

Eric Latino made the trip from Whitby , Ontario, Canada to run Pro Mod. He recorded a 13th best 6.897/193 run during the first session, but stepped up bigtime and went to the #6 spot in the 2nd session with a 5.947/242.

Richard Sexton rebounded from a poor run first session to claim the #11 spot after 2 with a 4.285/149 run with his rebuilt blown 2006 GTO.

The Shakedown Nationals, the brainchild of David Hance of New York Motorsports and one of doorslammer drag racing’s preeminent events, returns to historic Raceway Park in Englishtown for the 10th year, and once again, some of the heaviest hitters in the sport are expected to to be on hand to battle it out. The cool fall air in New Jersey, combined with the bite in the Old Bridge racing surface, makes for record-setting performances year and in and year out at the now world famous Shakedown, and along with some stout competition, the numbers could be jaw-dropping.

Special thanks to our presenting sponsor, Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels. For all of your racing and street/strip tire and wheel needs, look no further than Mickey Thompson!

Tim Lynch checks the tire pressure. Lynch wishes for a shot at the track today, but Outlaw 10.5 will get 3 runs Saturday.
The pits are packed and many cars are still unloading. Cloudy skies are greating racers here at Etown, with overcast conditions will produce cool temps and likely record runs throughout the weekend.
Steve Woolley readies his 66 Nova after MIR testing. He reports having lots of work to be ready for this weekend. Woolley is running Heavy Street and has his father helping tune the car.
Rich Bruder's x275 Mustang sits ready to race. When I stopped by, the car was sitting ready to race. Look for big things today from the Bruder's.

Paul Major on the right is at Shakedown with a new turbo configuration, with the angled. Here he takes time to talk with fellow Shakedown racers. Major was just getting the car to idle this morning in the Etown pits, but is confident that once the combo is sorted out, it will be stout.
Here's a peak at Major's new engine combo from Joe Newsham at J& E that will be assaulting the Outlaw Drag Radial class records if all works.
Mike Maggio is in the house at Shakedown as he made the haul to the East Coast. Scott Oksas also has his turbo powered Mustang from the west, splitting gas expenses for the trip. Maggio tested Wednesday and made 5 runs with a best of 5.80/251. Mike has 2 motors, 3 tranny's, a spare set of heads and lots of other spares, so when he puts the steam to the Camaro Saturday, he has the parts if needed to repair the car.
Andrew DeMarco made the switch to ProCharger as his turbo combo had too many variables. While only making one test pass to half track with the ProCharger, he's hoping for 4.50s out of the 438 Petty-tuned 3000 lbs Mustang. Andrew is from Boston, MA and running Limited Street.

Wheelie of the day from Shakedown belongs to Angel Muniz from New Garden, NY in his 93 Mustang.

And he stuck the landing, HARD!
Tom Haase has one of most unique 8.50 Index cars on the propery, running a full size 67 Impala. He ran too quick with an 8.454 and sits outside the 32 car field. The bump in 8.50 is 8.703 after 2 sessions.

Rich Bruder has his game face on during X275 action Friday. Rich was 4th best at 4.91/152.21 after 2 hits Friday.
Frank Soldridge launches his 2004 Mustang to the #1 spot in Limited Street. He has almost a tenth of a second on the LS field.
The scoreboard says it all- Frank Soldridge sits #1 at 4.279/ 185.13. Kevin Fiscus has more MPH at 186.54, but even at the #2 spot is over a tenth behind. Look for Fiscus to challenge for the top spot Saturday.
X275 racer David Valora waits his turn at the Etown 1320 during Friday night qualifying. Valora wound up #3 at 4.741/152.61 with at least one shot Saturday to improve, and if time permits possibly a second Saturday run.

8.50 Index racers are under the famous Raceway Park tower as they prepare for their qualifying run Friday at the Shakedown.
ROb Corujo sits #11 after 2 sessions in X275 at 5.271. He'll have to step up if he wants to stay in the 16 car field as the competition will tighten up the 5.623 bump for the 16 car field.
Paul Major had a big fire at the end of Friday’s action. He lost control and hit the wall backwards. Once he came to a stop this fire ensued. It’s doubtful he’ll be able to continue to race this weekend.
Kyle Buonocore stood his X275 Mustang on one tire, landed hard, and claimed the #9 spot for the class after 2 runs Friday. The Middlesex, NJ driver was lucky to land shiny-side up after getting so much air under the car at 200 feet.

Track manager and NHRA star Eddie Krawiec and starter Alan Brenner clean the track after a leak on the line.
