Fuel Altereds are mechanical bulls that run on nitromethane, and their drivers are the true cowboys of the drag racing world. You have to be ready for anything when you make a rip in one of these beasts, including wheelstands at the top end. Ryan Hill learned this the hard way when his “Nitro Bandido” Fuel Altered tried to take flight.
Modern Fuel Altereds are slightly more refined than their ancestors from the 1950s. The key word there is slightly. These days, the cars are longer thanks to being based on big-show nitro Funny Cars, but that doesn’t make them any easier to drive. They still behave like a bucking bull on every pass, and drivers are still able to wrestle them down the track.

The IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series features Fuel Altereds as a full-fledged class in 2026. Hill won an IHRA Iron Man in 2025 at the Darana Dragway 42 IHRA event. His goal was to repeat that performance at the Darana Motorsports Park IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series event. The problem is, the Nitro Bandido had other plans.
During a bye run, the Nitro Bandido decided to go into full party mode and climb the ring gear at the top end of the track. The result was a 240 mph wheelstand followed by a love tap on the wall. Thankfully, Hill was able to reel the car in and keep the damage from being much worse.
After the event, Hill and his team discovered just how tweaked the car was. The decision was made to send the chassis to McKinney Corp for a well-deserved “spa day” that included repairing all the damage from the encounter with the wall.
You’ll want to check out this video on the Dragzine YouTube channel where we talk to Ryan about the wheelstand. Thanks to Monday Morning Racer for providing the footage of the run, it shows just how wild of a ride it really was for Hill.
