Drag racers show no mercy to their driveline parts, they’re pushed to the limits each pass, and if you’re not using the right parts they will fail. Sonnax is here to help racers build a stout TH400 transmission with its lightweight and high-strength forward drum.
GM’s TH400 transmission is a versatile unit that can be found in everything from bracket cars, all the way up to some of the quickest heads-up race cars in the world. A TH400’s forward drum takes a lot of abuse, so Sonnax saw that as an opportunity to develop a part that not only saved weight, but was extremely strong. Sonnax’s TH400 forward drum is much lighter than a standard drum, and only three ounces heavier than your typical aluminum drum.
Gregg Nader explains how Sonnax took a standard TH400 forward drum and took it to the next level.
“We added holes around the outside circumference of the drum to save weight and help the transmission accelerate quicker. The drum has a proprietary check ball cap that won’t leak at high RPM levels. It has an optional clutch volume spacer, so if you’re worried about clutch fill and release times they can be addressed. Since this drum is made of a strong steel material it will last longer, and it has better wear characteristics than other forward drums on the market.”
The Sonnax TH400 forward drum will work with 30 spline 1-inch diameter input shafts, all the way to a 35 spline 1 1/8th-inch input shaft. If you’re going to have a TH400 built for drag racing, make sure to ask your transmission builder about the Sonnax TH400 lightweight and high-strength forward drum.
