The 56th Annual Bakersfield March Meet is set to kick off March 6-9th at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, California. A week ago, a handful of sportsman and nitro teams took advantage of an open test and tune day to get some laps in down the historic quarter mile. Two drivers were completing their required passes to earn their competition licenses, including Dusty Green in the “Circuit Breaker” Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragster and Matt Bynum, wheeling the “Bays & Rupert” Nitro Nostalgia Funny Car campaigned by the highly successful Jason Rupert.
Green posted a 5.95 at 225 mph on his final pass of the weekend to complete his licensing procedures and will shoe the Bob Richardson owned “Circuit Breaker” dragster this season in NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series competition. Bynum, a twenty two year old full time crew member on the NHRA DHL Toyota Funny Car driven by Del Worsham, had never driven any sort of drag racing vehicle before he strapped into the cockpit of Jason Rupert’s nitro Funny Car a few weeks ago in Sonoma, California. After three successful passes, Bynum completed his last three required passes to earn his license this past weekend in Bakersfield.
Also in action was the Top Fuel team of Neal & White with driver Rick White, who made several clean test laps and looks good heading into the March Meet. 2012 California Hot Rod Reunion winner Rick Williamson also completed several laps in the Mike Craig owned fueler. Jack Wright was in the house testing his nitro burning Fuel Altered, highly anticipating the addition of a Fuel Altered class to the March Meet this year. Several sportsman teams rounded out the testing action at Famoso Raceway last weekend and another test session is scheduled prior to the March Meet on February 28-March 2nd.
