Press Release from IHRA:

In the world of nostalgia drag racing the well-known March Meet held at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif. is often considered one of the biggest races of the year. But on the same day as the 2010 March Meet, roughly 2,000 miles away in Baton Rouge, La., eight nostalgia cars, under the new Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car banner, raced their way to numbers equaling and many times surpassing those at the Bakersfield meet. Those drivers make up the brand new Prostalgia class competing at all Nitro Jam events in 2010.

Drivers such as Greg Jacobsmeyer in the “All-Star” ’70 Dodge Challenger and Steve Nichols in the “Mill Road Boys” ’70 Camaro have already raced into the Nitro Jam history books with victories and record times, but at Baton Rouge it was Peter Gallen behind the wheel of the “Poverty Stricken” ’74 Vega that put down the lap heard round the world.  In only the second race of the 2010 season featuring the new class Gallen raced his way to a second day victory over Mike McIntire and in the process put down a tremendous 5.813 elapsed time at 246.84 miles-per-hour.

Thanks to the new “elimination only” racing style adopted by Nitro Jam in the professional categories the drivers are not given any hits at the track prior to eliminations and so far that has made little difference. Even with no pre-event track time the stars of the new Prostalgia class have lit up the scoreboards at the first two events with laps consistently in the upper five-second range at speeds well over 240 mph.

Those numbers rival the numbers put up by many of the top nostalgia teams in the country. In fact, based on the four hits at the Louisiana track by the Nitro Jam teams, six of the eight teams would have qualified in the top 12 of the 32-car field at the March Meet. That is quite a feat considering the level of competition at the California facility.

With numbers rivaling many of the best teams in the country it is becoming widely known that the place for championship nostalgia racing is on the Nitro Jam circuit. While Top Fuel will always be known as the “Kings of the Sport” and the new Pro Fuel Dragster class has created quite a buzz, the Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car class is quickly becoming one of the most popular classes ever run on the Nitro Jam Tour.

And through two events the competition couldn’t be any tighter with four different winners in four races as Gallen, McIntire, Nichols and Jacobsmeyer have all graced victory lane leading to their positions at the top of the field.

Jacobsmeyer currently leads the championship standings with 134 points, followed closely by Gallen (125). Nichols (111), McIntire (101) and John Dunn (76), driver of the “Dunn and Gone” ’73 Duster, round out the top five.  Next up for the Nitro Jam Tour is a trip to the heart of racing country – legendary Rockingham Dragway in Rockingham, N.C. It will be the first opportunity for Carolina race fans to see Nitro Jam’s two newest nitro classes including the older bodied Prostalgia Nitro Funny Cars and Pro Fuel Dragsters.

Don’t miss a minute of the action May 1-2 at “The Rock.”
