9 Second Camaro Project

Many people have been converting their daily drivers into a drag car from home using their own tools. Using your own skills saves tons of money from the labor it would have cost to do the work at a speed shop. Adding big power adder like a turbo or supercharger, and doing different modifications that lighten up the car to make it go fast are the most common do it yourself project out there right now.

A car enthusiast over at LS1tech.com is doing a project to get his Camaro into the 9 second range. He started off by striping the car of all the interior including the dash and seats. The car was an LT1 model, so he dropped the motor out as well. Having plans for big power he wanted a LS base motor that was easier to tune and make big reliable power.

Next he cut a lot of metal out including part of the front fenders, and added a light weight front suspension including a new K-member and A-arms. The front of the frame was notched out to allow a bigger radiator that would stand straight up giving more room in the engine bay for a power adder.

Original plans where to get the car into the 10s. After working on the project, he realized 9s would not be to much harder to reach. The plan started out with him putting a 5.3 liter motor from a 2001 truck into the F-body. With plans to make big power, he added a supercharger, and a custom front mount intercooler. The drivetrain was beefed up with a TH350 that was equipped with a reverse manual valve body, and a back-braced Ford 9-inch rear end.

To make it legal at the track, the car was taken to a speed shop and a roll cage was added. Although the car is still not complete, it’s in the finishing stages, and should have no problem getting into the high 9s or low 10s.
