Andy McCoy Race Cars is one of the top chassis shops in the country when it comes to door cars, and their newest creation backs that reputation up. The absolutely evil-looking 1969 Chevelle Pro Mod that just rolled out of the shop for car owner Jon Garrett is more than just a pretty face — itss ready to be a player on race day.
Garrett’s new ride will be driven by one of the best wheelmen to strap into a Pro Mod car: the always-fast Terry Coyle. Over the years, Coyle had driven McCoy’s very own shop cars, set records, and even won the prestigious World Series of Drag Racing. Currently, Coyle tunes for Terry Leggett’s Pro Extreme Mustang in the PDRA, so he knows how to get quick cars down the race track.
The chassis and all of the components were built in-house, and are based on McCoy’s winning Pro Mod/Pro Extreme chassis design. The chrome moly double framerail chassis was built specifically for the blower combination that will be run with the car, and for ease of maintenance for the team at the track.
To help keep the weight down, tons of titanium was used in the car, including the fuel cell mount, window frames, parachute mounts, and body mounts.
The diet doesn’t stop with the chassis on this Chevelle, though, as the body is unique in design, as well.
“The body on this car is the second clear carbon one we have done. The process is very difficult, but it has it’s advantages, including being very light” McCoy explains.
When McCoy says light, he means it … the body’s total weight is a scant 55 pounds. The body is also totally removable, and has a clear carbon wing so everything looks ultra-smooth and flowing, since the carbon weave all goes the same direction.
Powering the car will be a 521 cubic inch short deck motor built by Snyder Motorsports. The engine was purchased by Coyle and powered Terry Leggett’s Mustang when it went 3.50s in Pro Extreme trim. Providing the boost will be the massive PSI C-rotor screw blower, and a Bruno/Lenco transmission will put the power down.
The car will see action mostly at Outlaw Pro Mod races at the London Dragway and Ohio Valley Dragway, but will also make some passes at PDRA events when time allows.
