Torque converter pressure manipulation is one way to extract more performance from a turbocharged combination. ATI Performance Products now offers internal and external Pressure Dump Kits for Powerglide transmissions.
It can be tricky to build the perfect torque converter for a turbo combination. The converter needs to be loose enough to help the turbos spool, but that can have a negative impact on performance down track. This is where pressure dumps come in: they allow the torque converter to be manipulated by changing its operating pressure, thus altering how it functions as power is applied.
A pressure dump reduces the pressure and amount of fluid going to the torque converter. This reduction helps the engine spool the turbos while the vehicle is building boost on the transbrake. A pressure dump can also be used to soften a tight converter, providing additional tuning options.
ATI created external Pressure Dump Kits for Powerglide transmissions that work with OEM and OEM-style SFI-certified cases, as well as its GEN 2 ATI SFI Supercase. An internal dump kit is also available that will work with most Powerglide transmission cases.
