The Top Sportsman class is the most exciting forms of bracket racing you’ll see in the sport, with a large mix of different cars and engine combinations that make for interesting six-second, 200-plus mph racing in the class. Seasoned Top Sportsman veteran Benjamin Board has been successful in the class over the years, and just reset the small-block centrifugal supercharger record with a giant ProCharger providing the boost.
For Board, racing success is no accident — it comes from wheeling many different cars for over 22 years. After having some problems earlier in the year with his Jerry Bickel-built Camaro, Board has everything firing on all eight cylinders now.
“M&M Competition Engines reworked the engine to address some issues we struggled with earlier in the year, and went with a new camshaft that allows the engine to breathe better,” Board shared. “We also recently made a change in our lubricant program to High Performance Lubricants‘ new Bad Ass Racing Oil.
“This change has helped with some of the oiling system issues we fought in the past, and allows us to push the engine harder without milking the oil from the methanol we run. It has also helped seal it up better than ever before to maintain vacuum pressure on each pass,” Board explains.
All of those changes added enough power for Board to reset the centrifugal supercharged small-block record using his beastly ProCharger F3R-121 blower. Board was able to break two records in one weekend, running an impressive 1/8-mile time of 4.087-seconds to set that record, and out the back door in the 1/4-mile for the record with an elapsed time of 6.376.
Don’t think that Board is done yet, though, as he wants to break both of his own records, and soon. “We’re aiming to be the first centrifugal supercharged small-block to achieve a three-second pass in the 1/8 and to push the 1/4-mile to the 6.20s. We’re trying to achieve them both at the NMCA/NMRA Super Bowl at Joliet later this month,” Board says.
Board appears to be on track, and primed to perhaps break both records again soon with his ProCharged M&M Competition Engines-powered ride!
