The Limited Drag Radial class (LDR) has been picking up steam and growing since its debut earlier this year. Racers have been moving to the class so they can take advantage of the rules that bring parity to the racing and the potentially reduced costs versus the Radial vs the World class. Longtime small-tire and Pro Mod racer Bill Lutz is jumping into the LDR world, bringing his notorious Outlaw 10.5 1967 Camaro out of retirement to shake things up in the class.
When the LDR class was announced, it piqued Lutz’s interests as something he wanted to be a part of. “Looking at the class and knowing all the people involved, I could see they were on to something with the rules. It’s like going back in time and racing with a very limited rulebook. I feel they have made the current rules to where any combination can win,” Lutz says.
Lutz was able to pick up a used 822 cubic inch Fulton Racing Engines mill to power the Camaro for LDR battle at a killer price. The motor will be converted to fuel injection and will be managed by a Haltech ECU. A combination of Switzer Dynamics and Kevin Neal parts will comprise the dry-shot nitrous system.
All four stages of the giggle juice will get their orders from a NLR Systems AMS 2000 nitrous controller, while a Magnafuel pump and regulator will provide the fuel. A pair of Accufab 8900 throttle bodies will introduce all the air into the motor for Lutz.
TJ Strange is currently working on getting the monster-sized motor to fit in the Camaro and buttoning everything up for testing. Once the car is completed, Lutz is going to hit as many of the remaining LDR races as possible, along with the Import vs Domestic: Haltech World Cup Finals, and a few grudge races, as well.
Lutz had a lot of help getting his Camaro track ready for LDR battle this year, and he appreciates the assistance. “I want to thank all the sponsors who help get this old car back on the track; they’re a big help. Companies like Haltech, Magnafuel, The Driveshaft Shop, NLR Systems, Pro Torque, RPM Transmissions, Prolite Batteries, and Scott Braskett Race Cars do what they can to support us racers,” Lutz says.
Look for Lutz and his familiar Camaro to be back on the track for some LDR racing in the latter half of the 2016 racing season.
