Becoming a champion isn’t something that’s handed to you in racing — you have to grind it out on the road being consistent at different races, and fight for every round win over all your rivals. Jerry and Darrell Bird, also known as the Bird Boyz, battled their way through the Dirty South No Prep Racing Series (DSNP) in 2016 to be crowned the Big Tire class champions, and they’re looking to repeat in 2017. The Bird Boyz plan on landing at Mountain Park Dragway in Clay City, Kentucky and showing the Big Tire field they’re ready to soar to another series title.

In 2016 the Bird Boyz came into the DSNP finals with their 1992 Ford Probe neck and neck with Birdman in the points standings and had their eyes on locking up the title. The stage was set for a dramatic showdown in the finals with the winner being crowned champion, but Birdman suffered catastrophic engine failure in the semi-finals, thus making the Bird Boyz the Big Tire champions.

According to Jerry Bird, driver of the Probe, running a points series isn’t new to their team and they understand how to get the job done.

“We have done some points racing before with the NMCA back in the day, so we know how important every race is. For 2017, we’re trying to get as many points as possible, so we’re going to every event to get those 100 bonus points for attending each one. Our goal is to run this whole series and repeat as champions.”

Going to a new track for round two of the DSNP won’t really change the game plan for the Bird Boyz at all — they’re confident they can get the Probe to work anywhere. “We’re used to racing on the streets, asphalt, and other terrible surfaces. Running at the track is a treat for us and going to a new place isn’t an issue at all. If we go down the track without any problems it will be hard for anybody to beat us,” Bird says.

In the DSNP there’s no such thing as an easy race — all of the racers are tough and make any round difficult. The Bird Boyz were able to take out their rival ‘The 55’ not once, but twice during the first event and even made it to the final, where they fell to Birdman in a close race. At the Clay City event, the Bird Boyz don’t expect the same outcome if they meet Birdman again.

“If I get out of the hole on Birdman it’s going to be really hard for him to catch up with me, I can promise you that. He can’t run me down like he can run other cars down, that’s for sure,” Bird says.

The Bird Boyz plan on bringing the heat for round two of the series; they’re working on getting their new motor dialed in and making power. “We’re still trying to get a handle on this new 738 cubic-inch Charlie Buck motor. The Induction Solutions nitrous system works great with it, and the BTE transmission has taken the abuse we throw at it. Along with Wolf Racing and TPS Motorsports help, we should have something for the Big Tire class at this race,” Bird says.
