Floyds Knob, Indiana native Bo Butner “cashed in” on his trip west with a Factory Showdown victory at “The Strip” in Las Vegas Nevada.
In the all Cobra Jet finals, Butner’s Factory Showdown/B (Naturally Aspirated Class) 2014 Cobra Jet ran an 8.998 elapsed time to beat Brent Calvert’s 2014 Factory Showdown/A (Supercharged Class) Cobra Jet.
It was the first Factory Showdown win for the new Ford 429 Ninja pushrod engine combination. The engine made its debut in Butner’s car at the U.S. Nationals and after some minor tweaks and testing, it proved ready to do battle the heavy hitters from Chevy Racing and Mopar Performance. In winning the special race-within-a-race Factory Showdown/B class for Naturally Aspirated engines, Butner defeated Victor Cagnazzi’s 427 powered COPO Camaro and David Barton’s 426 Hemi powered Mopar DragPak Challenger.
On Thursday in round one of the Factory Showdown/ B class, Butner cut a .008 light to Victor Cagnazzi’s .120 light. Butner then motored down the track to a 9.096 e.t @ 131.25mph to the losing COPO’s 9.103 e.t @ 148.64 mph.
Round two was a slugfest as Butner faced the “big gun” from Team Mopar, David Barton. In the highly anticipated race, Barton left first with a .004 light to Butner’s .021 light. The Ninja Ford 429 started to make a move at the 1/8 mile mark and caught the mighty new generation HEMI at the stripe with a 9.015 [email protected] 149.22 mph to Barton’s losing 9.033 e.t. @ 147.73 mph. Butner’s Margin Of Victory at the 1320 stripe was a mere: 0.0018 seconds (approximately 5 inches). Close racing for the FS/B title.
In the other Factory Showdown/ A class, West coast racer and young gun Brent Calvert was mowing through the supercharged entries. This is the first year for the Calvert Racing team to run the Supercharged 5.0L Cobra Jet engine combo and they turned a lot of heads in Vegas with their performance. In round one Calvert beat fellow west coast racer’s Vince Porters 2014 COPO Camaro. In the highly anticipated FS/A final round, youth overcame experience as Calvert beat Cobra Jet heavy hitter Chris Holbrook.In the Factory Stock Showdown finals that matched the winner of FS/A vs FS/B, Butner had the Cobra Jet combo set on “KILL” as he cut a better light (.037 reaction time to Calvert’s .044 reaction time) and made his quickest pass of the weekend with a 8.998 e.t. @ 149.18mph.
Butner was all smiles in the winner circle as he wheeled his unique Satin Blue Jim Butner Auto Sales Cobra Jet into the Las Vegas aka “The Strip” winners circle. He gladly accepted the Factory Showdown Wally and a check from NHRA for the victory.
