High-priced car auctions often bring out incredibly wealthy automotive collectors for whom spending $1 million in a single day is a regular occurrence. Unfortunately, these cars are often relegated to climate controlled garages and rarely, if ever, see the light of day…unless it is to go up for sale again. For vintage racing cars especially, this is an ironic and sad fate.
But not every millionaire treats their expensive cars like delicate flowers. Some guys have the cajones to go out and race these rare and
costly cars…and it doesn’t always go as planned. Jalopnik reports that during this weekend’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, an exceptionally rare and expensive Shelby Daytona Coupe crashed in what can only be described as a costly mistake.
We love that there are still people willing to race their vintage cars on the track. Unfortunately though, this sometimes means these cars are going to get hurt. In this case the Shelby Daytona, reportedly the last one ever assembled, lost control in turn 5 at the Laguna Seca circuit. It is unclear what happened, whether it was a mechanical failure, driver error, or some other circumstance that caused this crash.
The Shelby Daytona Coupe was Carroll Shelby’s ultimate racing machine, and just five of them were made. Back in 2009, a Shelby Daytona Coupe sold for an impressive $7.25 million, meaning the $4 million number could be a lowball.
After this accident, we’re not sure how that affects the value, though we still think it is cool that some collectors are willing to race their uber-expensive vintage race cars. Do you agree, or is there a point where a car needs to stay a garage queen?
