Brazilian drag racer Cadu Moreira escaped serious injury in a harrowing crash last weekend at Velopark’s annual Armageddon heads-up drag racing event in Nova Santa Rita, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
Moreira was racing his wild, all-wheel-drive, screw-supercharged Chevrolet Nova against Josemar Hudema and his likewise all-wheel-drive Opala, when he suffered tire shake and lost control of the machine just beyond half track. Moreira slammed into the concrete guardrail and metal fencing, the car shedding parts and pieces and erupting into a fireball as the car rolled and spun to a stop in the middle of the racetrack. Despite the major impact and ensuing flames that engulfed the cockpit, Moreira climbed from the car under his own power. He was checked out by medical personnel and suffered only what were reported to be minor injuries.
“Just to reassure everyone, thanks to God and the safety items in the car and the rescue team at the event, who promptly arrived shortly after the incident, I am 100 percent and did not suffer [any injuries]. [I] went to the hospital to test everything and came out OK. I only have some pain and that’s all,” said Moreira. who returned to the track after his evaluation.
Moreira said this is the first time he has suffered a crash like this during a competition.

“Inside [of the car], it’s scary. But we are trained for these moments. I’ve never experienced an accident of this level. It was one of the worst in sports history in terms of crash video. I’m very happy to be able to go home, but very sad to see all the car investment lost,” he said.
