Veteran nitrous Pro Mod owner Brian Shaw will debut a new-to-him racecar during the 2016 Yellow Bullet Nationals at Cecil County Dragway this weekend, and he’s looking to shake things up in the category.
Shaw has been in the Pro Mod game for many years, including stints with the NMCA, ADRL, and assisting Billy Glidden with his program. The new car that will be on the track is a 1969 Camaro from Jerry Bickel Race Cars that has some history in the class. “This is Khalid Al Balooshi’s old championship car that he ran a few years ago. Balooshi shipped it over for me to check it out, I knew it had been fast and well taken care of, so it worked out great for me,” Shaw says.
Being a nitrous racer, Shaw didn’t mess around when it came to the powerplant of his new car. Under the hood will be a 959 cubic inch mill form Sonny’s Racing Engines plumbed with five stages of nitrous courtesy of a Speedtech nitrous system designed by Shannon Jenkins. The fuel injected motor has a different air induction system, with a carbon fiber blower hat.
“I’ve never been a big fan of the giant hood scoops on these cars, so I worked with Dustin Hodges, an engineer from Virginia Tech, to come up with something different. We settled on that blower hat for the nitrous setup to help with the air speed going into the throttle bodies,” Shaw explains.
Troy Baum at RACEwires got everything wired up in the Camaro, including the FuelTech FT500 system that will be controlling the big cubic inch Sonny’s monster. “FuelTech has been a big part of this and great to deal with; their support has been unbelievable,” Shaw says.
Driving for Shaw will be none other than James Hancock, father of radial tire star Jamie Hancock. “James and I look at things in the same way; he’s a good driver and tuner, so he’ll be a true asset to have around the team,” Shaw explains.
