According to Winter Meltdown 2 organizer Matt Plotkin, this will be a true No Prep event that will challenge both drivers and tuners to navigate the track.
“This is as no prep as it gets! We’re doing more than just scraping the track and knocking the glue off of it. We are removing 100 percent of the rubber and taking the track down to its bare concrete surface. There is nothing closer to a real street racing surface than the 660 feet of bare concrete that you will experience here. There are a few reasons we are taking it to this extreme, but the main reason is that we feel like the term “no prep” is being stretched too far these days. When you start seeing tractors dragging the track and shoes coming off peoples feet at a no prep race, it’s time to take a step back and remind everyone that these races are meant to try and simulate street-like conditions.”
Besides the totally bare surface, Winter Meltdown 2 is different from other No Prep events based on their class rules. For the Big Tire class, they allow the composite body cars to run as long as they are within three-inches of the factory wheelbase length. They have also split the Small Tire class into two separate categories: a 28-inch and a 29-inch class. The 28-inch tire class is for your traditional small tire cars and doesn’t allow for twin turbo combinations, where the 29-inch class allows the twin-turbo cars to run and has more open rules.
Another reason the Winter Meltdown 2 will be a star-studded No Prep affair is how the event pays those who dare to tangle with the bare surface. “One of the biggest things that attract people to our events are the evenly distributed payouts among our biggest three classes. The Big Tire and Small Tire class all race for the same amount of money to the winner; $10,000 at 12 cars or $15,000 at 24 cars. The fact that everyone is treated the same when it comes to class compensation goes a long way.”
