As has been the norm for what feels like eons now, CFE Racing customers continue to dominate in the NHRA’s Pro Stock category. This past weekend at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park just outside Phoenix during the Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals, CFE was at the top of the field yet again.
Pro Stock racer Chris McGaha posted the top qualifying time with a sweet 6.530 at 210.60, picking up right where former car owner Mike Edwards left off at the end of the 2013 season. The relative newcomer to Pro Stock competed in a limited schedule of events last season with an old car and combination before purchasing Edwards’ entire program when Edwards retired at the end of the ’13 race season. McGaha retained Edwards’ crew chief Jim Yates as part of the program as he makes his bid for the 2014 Pro Stock championship. McGaha’s machine relies on CFE’s Pro Stock CNC-ported DRCE cylinder heads and one of the company’s billet intake manifolds to produce Pro Stock horsepower.
Not to be outdone, fellow CFE Racing customer Allen Johnson put his Pro Stock Dodge Avenger into the winner’s circle at the end of the event after qualifying sixth with a 6.553, just behind Shane Gray’s 6.551. Johnson uses the company’s CNC-ported Mopar HEMI 99 cylinder heads and a CFE billet intake manifold. In order to get to the winner’s circle, Johnson eliminated Jimmy Alund in a close race in round one – just three feet separated the pair at the stripe. Round two saw Jason Line go down in another close race, before Johnson defeated Dave Connolly in the semifinal.
The final round brought V. Gaines in a battle of Mopars (and CFE customers), where Johnson came out on top with a 6.543 at 212.23 MPH, as Gaines shook the tires and had to call it a day.
