Classifieds Finds: Pair Of Ultra-Quick Outlaw 10.5 Rides

At the turn of the century, the hottest fad in all of drag racing was the wild and wooly Outlaw 10.5 category. Holes in the wall all across the south were bursting at the seams with backhalved Mustangs, Camaros, and the like, and big money promotions were a near-weekly occurrence.

But what goes up must come back down, and Outlaw 10.5 ran its natural course and began to whither as racers moved on or moved out. But then something exciting happened – the class experienced a glorious revival that continues to this day, and despite the overflowing popularity of other doorslammer eliminators, Outlaw 10.5 remains one of the most relevant categories in all of drag racing.

This week a pair of the nicest machines to wear a set of 10.5W’s popped up on Al Gore’s interwebs for sale, and if you happen to be independently wealthy or sitting on a winning lottery ticket, there are no finer ways to go Outlaw 10.5 racing.

Danny Lowry, who has reportedly purchased the turbocharged Pro Modified Mustang formerly owned and driven by Coby Rabon, has his record-setting 1998 Mustang listed on the Proline Racing website for a cool $150,000 ready to rock. Not only do you get a sleek Bell Chassisworks-built rolling race car with double frame rails, Santhuff struts, a Bickel Pro Mod Floater rear, and the works, but a monstrous 670 cubic inch Proline bullet nestled behind a pair of Precision Pro Mod 94mm turbos. Lowry has pushed his flamed mount to a best of 4.18 at 186 miles per hour, so it’s certainly no slouch by any standards.

Also headed to a new home is the slick Super Street 10.5W first-gen Camaro of Floridian Jesse Violante, who debuted the sinister flat black ride in NMCA competition last spring after acquiring it from former owner Bryan Markiewicz. The ’69 Camaro, built in 2006 by Sheppard Race Cars, features original all steel roof and quarter panels, fiberglass doors, nose, and deck lid, Strange nine-inch floater rear, Santhuff shocks, a Racepak V300 and dashboard setup, and much more. Violante has the car listed on Racing Junk at $50,000 as a roller.

These are exceptional purchases that will put someone right into contention; but we certainly hope that their sale isn’t a signal that interest is waning again in Outlaw 10.5 just when things are getting good again.
