During a short break in his NHRA racing program, veteran drag racer Cory McClenathan got behind the wheel of the FabTech Industries/Maxima backed off-road truck in preparation for his off-road racing debut later in the year.
“It was so much fun,” he said enthusiastically. “The guys all said I picked up on it really fast, but I couldn’t learn fast enough. There’s a major learning curve to be really good at it, but they all thought that because
I was used to going fast, it came a little easier. Turning, obviously, was the hardest part. Making those big jumps was so awesome, but it was easy to jump too far and not be set up for the next turn — you’ve got to be thinking about all of this before you land — but I brought the truck back in one piece.”
Back on the dragstrip, McClenathan and the Dakin team will compete in Englishtown, Bristol, Norwalk, Brainerd, St. Louis and possibly Indy with the Warrior Racing team. Later in the season, McClenathan will race with Dexter Tuttle’s Liquid MPG Fuel Additive entry during the Countdown to the Championship events in Charlotte, Dallas, Las Vegas and Pomona, at the season-ending Auto Club NHRA Finals.
Despite his off-road excursions, McClenathan wants his fans to know that his heart is still at the dragstrip.
“I miss doing the full-time schedule; I’ve got to get back to that,” he said. “Everyone that I’m working with in these other projects knows that and understands it.”
