Modern supercars are no doubt impressive machines, the product of world-class design and engineering that exhibit cutting-edge racing technology in every facet of their construction, and with both power and handling central to their existence, they’re capable of doing a lot of things at a high level, from straight-line performance to ripping up corner on a road course. And while the quarter mile isn’t typically the forte of high-end sports cars (and as drag racers, the quarter mile performance is all we’re really concerned with), they still take to the strip quite well, as we’ve seen in countless examples of nearly priceless machines on the track.
As a case in point, the team at Drag Times tipped us to an exclusive story in which they recently got their hands on a quarter-million dollar Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale, a 5.2L V8-equipped luxury supercar from the famous Italian car manufacturer that puts down 570 horsepower in stock form, to test on the dyno and at the track.
The all-wheel-drive STS, as it’s known, produced 509 horsepower and 361 ft/lbs. of torque on the dyno, and that kind of power, combined with a 6-speed gearbox and the liberal use of carbon fiber for a lightweight weigh-in, makes it a very potent combination. Th crew then headed to the Palm Beach International Raceway in south Florida, and reeled off several runs in the mid 11’s, including an 11.34, and 11.39, and an 11.44, all right around the 126 MPH mark, with a best short time of 1.75.Â
Although unconfirmed, Drag Times believes this to be the quickest and fastest quarter mile runs in the world for a fully-stock Lamborghini. That’s not a statement we can validate, but it certainly shows what these cars are capable of. Of course, many will point out the cost to performance ratio an’t even begin to compare to a supercharged late-model Mustang, a ZR1 Corvette, or any other numbers of cheaper sports cars and muscle cars. But the Lamborghini does to many things well, and if you’ve got the kind of cash to be in the STS market, we say more power to you in choosing one of these rare marvels.
You can check out the full story over at Drag Times, including complete dyno graph data, times lips, and additional photos and video from the track (including some heads-up runs with an equally badass Porsche 991 Turbo) , so be sure to click over and give it a read.
